[SOLVED] Adding Desktop Shortcuts and Icons in Gnome

I recently installed gnome (previously I used to login to xfce4). When I log in, the screen has the wallpaper, but it is not the Desktop. I have to open the file manager and navigate to the Desktop folder to access items on my Desktop. Also, here is what it looks like when I right click (no usual options like "create a new folder" etc)...

This does not happen when I login to xfce4, but happens with gnome.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

To the best of my knowledge, in Gnome you don't get desktop icon functionality.

I did not know that Gnome has disabled Desktop icons and shortcuts!

If anyone else is interested, I found a solution.

If you prefer Nemo to Nautilus, you can follow the tips outlined here:

In a nutshell,

1. Install Nemo
2. Disable Nautilus
3. Create the ~/.config/autostart/nemo-desktop.desktop file
