[SOLVED] GPU Failure when starting libreoffice on Lenovo T495

When I attempt to start libreoffice the screen freezes after the initial libreoffice splash screen finishes loading.

When using journalctl I noticed this amdgpu error:

Oct 04 08:45:30 kernel: [drm:amdgpu_dm_atomic_commit_tail [amdgpu]] *ERROR* Waiting for fences timed out or interrupted!
Oct 04 08:45:30 kernel: [drm:amdgpu_job_timedout [amdgpu]] *ERROR* ring gfx timeout, signaled seq=27598, emitted seq=27601
Oct 04 08:45:30 kernel: [drm:amdgpu_job_timedout [amdgpu]] *ERROR* Process information: process kwin_x11 pid 867 thread kwin_x11:cs0 pid 945
Oct 04 08:45:30 kernel: [drm] GPU recovery disabled.

Running on kernel 5.3.1-arch1-1-ARCH.
Installed relevant packages:

local/glu 9.0.1-1
local/libva-mesa-driver 19.2.0-2
local/mesa 19.2.0-2
local/mesa-demos 8.4.0-1
local/mesa-vdpau 19.2.0-2
local/opencl-mesa 19.2.0-2
local/amd-ucode 20190923.417a9c6-1
local/opencl-mesa 19.2.0-2
local/xf86-video-amdgpu 19.0.1-1 (xorg-drivers)
local/libreoffice-fresh 6.3.1-1

I attempted using libreoffice-still but the same system failure occurs.

Re: [SOLVED] GPU Failure when starting libreoffice on Lenovo T495

I added the kernel parameter "amdgpu.gpu_recovery=1" to see if that would fix the issue. It made it worse. Instead of the screen freezing forever eventually the screen turns off forever.

journalctl:

Oct 04 12:19:56 kernel: amdgpu 0000:06:00.0: GPU reset begin!
Oct 04 12:19:57 kernel: amdgpu 0000:06:00.0: GPU mode1 reset

Re: [SOLVED] GPU Failure when starting libreoffice on Lenovo T495

Those errors suggest low level hardware or driver issues, I doubt they are related to libreoffice.

Please post full lspci -k  , dmesg and/or journalctl -b .

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Re: [SOLVED] GPU Failure when starting libreoffice on Lenovo T495

There are some messages that stand out (aspm , iommu ) but let's first check if you have latest firmware.

Lenovo has a T495 and a T495s , each with their own drivers.
Verify if you have latest firmware for your model.
T495
T405s

Are you using early KMS modesetting ?

Re: [SOLVED] GPU Failure when starting libreoffice on Lenovo T495

My model is the T495 and it did require a firmware update.

After updating the firmware the problem persists, libreoffice still crashes the display and produces the same amdgpu errors as described above.

Re: [SOLVED] GPU Failure when starting libreoffice on Lenovo T495

Additonial  DDG searches showed there are cases where libreoffice crashes gpu , especially when setup to use opencl (off by default).

Create a new (temporary) user , login to graphical environment with that user and start libreoffice.
If that doesn't crash, the problem is in user settings.

Re: [SOLVED] GPU Failure when starting libreoffice on Lenovo T495

Created a temporary fake user, logged into a plasma seesion, and then started libreoffice. Causes the same amdgpu error.

Mentioning OpenCL... My job requires developing with OpenCL so I have many packages related to it if that makes a difference.

Re: [SOLVED] GPU Failure when starting libreoffice on Lenovo T495

I too have this issue with libre office. for now I had an enviromental variable in ~/.bashrc too this

# 2019-08-16 06:43 - Linux 5.2.8-znver1-byw, Mesa 19.1.4 - Disable OpenGL support in libreoffice as it cause my screen to go black and laptop unresponsive which requires me to force reboot
export SAL_DISABLEGL=1

that comment is something I put there to remind me why it's there

opencl is still enabled for me but I've not given it any opencl work yet ( explicity )

it's not a fix but mesa 19.3.x is coming soon and I never did enable this option for 19.2 as I'm using 19.3-dev

Re: [SOLVED] GPU Failure when starting libreoffice on Lenovo T495

Alucinor : sinatosk workaround is worth a try.

I also think we should investigate your OpenCL setup.

Post the output of

$ ls /etc/OpenCL/vendors
$ clinfo # install clinfo from community repo if needed
$ pacman -Qs opencl

Re: [SOLVED] GPU Failure when starting libreoffice on Lenovo T495

I was sure that sinatosk's suggestion would temporarily fix my problem, but alas libreoffice still crashes in the same fashion with SAL_DISABLEGL=1. The one odd thing however is the amdgpu errors no longer appear in journalctl, there are no errors at all. My screen still goes blank and the computer freezes.

ls /etc/OpenCL/vendors

Re: [SOLVED] GPU Failure when starting libreoffice on Lenovo T495

Found something useful at https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 5#p1858065 .

Try

SAL_DISABLE_OPENCL=1 SAL_DISABLEGL=1 SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gen libreoffice --safe-mode

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

(A works at time B)  && (time C > time B ) ≠  (A works at time C)

Re: [SOLVED] GPU Failure when starting libreoffice on Lenovo T495

That works!

I further troubleshooted down by removing parts of the command to see if it still worked. I was able to boil it down to running the following command and libreoffice works with no crash:

SAL_DISABLE_OPENCL=1 libreoffice

So your earlier post about most of these types of crashes involving OpenCL was correct. I added this to my ~/.xprofile:

# 10-13-19 - libreoffice crashes system if OpenCL is enabled
export SAL_DISABLE_OPENCL=1

Now libreoffice works perfectly fine from the application launcher menu. You are a lifesaver lone_wolf thank you so much for all your help! This was fixed just in time for a presentation I wanted to use the new lappy with this coming Friday yay. smile

Hello, I experienced the very same thing. I found another solution though. You can edit the file

~/.config/libreoffice/4/user/registrymodifications.xcu

and set this value :

<item oor:path="/org.openoffice.Office.Common/Misc"><prop oor:name="UseOpenCL" oor:op="fuse"><value>false</value></prop></item>

Re: [SOLVED] GPU Failure when starting libreoffice on Lenovo T495

Hi,

I have the same problem on X395.
Some details.

Using :

libreoffice --safe-mode

You should get a checkbox [Configure] that offers a option to disable OpenCL.

I manage to not disable OpenCL by uninstalling opencl-mesa.

I still have other OpenCL “vendors”, using the proprietary runtime.
Following https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/GPGPU

$ ls /etc/OpenCL/vendors
amdocl64.icd  amdocl-orca64.icd

You can check that libreoffice use OpenCL. Help > About libreoffice.

Version: 7.0.6.2
Build ID: 00(Build:2)
CPU threads: 8; OS: Linux 5.12; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3
Locale: fr-FR (fr_FR.utf8); Langue IHM : fr-FR
7.0.6-3
Calc: CL

The last line is about using OpenCL. If OpenCL is disabled it will show "threaded" instead of "CL".
