System crashes

Hi guys,

I am an experienced arch linux user, but my system crashes on a daily basis on different occasions, like watching a video on youtube or playing a game (does not matter if native or via proton). Only a hard power reset fixes this. I can not really say, when this problem first started to occur, but it is not new and kinda unpredictable so I cannot reproduce this by actions.

Sadly the journal has no error messages at all.
journalctl -b-1 gives this

Okt 10 13:42:05 fooBox gnome-keyring-daemon[904]: asked to register item /org/freedesktop/secrets/collection/login/1, but it's already registered

The crash happened at approx 14:05 so you can see there is just no log entry fitting that moment.

The MediaDecoderStateMachine error is related to playing the video in firefox and should not be the issue.

First I thought it be a faulty RAM but memtest shows no issues.

Can this be due to a bug in the nvidia driver?

I have no second computer here so I can not try and ssh into it, but my bluetooth controller immeadiatly loses connection, so I guess it is unresponsive anyhow.

Nouveau driver is no option hence it lacks the 3D acceleration, does it not?

Any idea how I can troubleshoot this further? Feel free to ask if you want to know any more.

thanks for you time,
  Chris

Re: System crashes

like watching a video on youtube or playing a game

Is it always when the system is under heavier load?

You could run synthetic stress tests that either bang the CPU, the RAM or the GPU to see whether there's a pattern.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Stress_testing

As for memtest, you need to run this for multiple cycles (rather days than hours) to get a meaningful idea about the RAM condition.

If nothing helps, you'll require a crash kernel to recover from and inspect a crashed kernel.

Re: System crashes

How long did you test RAM by memtest? It should be tested even a few days to be sure that memory is ok.

You can check if Firefox have some crash logs in you home directory or in Firefox's 'about:crashes' tab.

You can turn off hardware acceleration in Firefox and see if crash happens.

And nouveau driver has 2D/3D acceleration, OpenGl support (I even play on old Geforce), but since second generation of Maxwell GPUs it can't rise frequencies when under heavy load, because nvidia is encrypting GPUs firmware, so it hurts performance on newer cards (and newer cards have less features supported).
