I am using Thunar standalone (i.e. without XFCE but with i3 as window manager). Starting applications by double-clicking on a file not start the corresponding application (e.g. a text editor for text files). exo is installed. I checked that the applications (e.g. text editor) is set correctly via
exo-preferred-applicationsWhen right-clicking on a file, the correct application is shown in the menue that pops up, but clicking on the menue item doesn't start the application.
Any idea what is missing or needs to be adjusted?
Thanks.

thunar from a terminal's output? In general it also might be that your session/dbus is broken, how are you starting i3? if via .xinitrc, ensure the proper session variables are present note the blue boxes

Thunar terminal output: nothing
i3 is started by the login manager (lxdm), don't know if .xinitrc is involved as well.
I checked the dbus services (dbus-org.freedesktop.Avahi.service, *.network1.service, *.nm-dispatcher.service, *.resolve1.service and *.timesync1.service). All are active without issues, except *.nm-dispatcher.service. That service is inactive.
.xinitrc (I didn't change anything manually):
#!/bin/sh
userresources=$HOME/.Xresources
usermodmap=$HOME/.Xmodmap
sysresources=/etc/X11/xinit/.Xresources
sysmodmap=/etc/X11/xinit/.Xmodmap
# merge in defaults and keymaps
if [ -f $sysresources ]; then
xrdb -merge $sysresources
fi
if [ -f $sysmodmap ]; then
xmodmap $sysmodmap
fi
if [ -f "$userresources" ]; then
xrdb -merge "$userresources"
fi
if [ -f "$usermodmap" ]; then
xmodmap "$usermodmap"
fi
# start some nice programs
if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ] ; then
for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/?*.sh ; do
[ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
done
unset f

I investigated further. Interestingly, it's not a general session/dbus problem. I figured out that some programs are starting from Thunar (e.g. Geeqie when I double click on picture files). It seems to be a problem with the terminal emulator that I use. I use termite (which does not start). For test reasons I installed gnome-terminal. This is working fine.
Any idea why termite is not starting? I did not find any hint wrt. termite and problems with dbus.
Thanks.

I close this topic since my original problem is solved. I di not find out why termite doesn't start, but I am not bound to it and switched to a different terminal emulator.
Thanks, V1del, for your help.
