No. I discovered that LXDE is actually outdated, and loaded LXQt (the new LXDE). In LXQt I choose to not use Openbox (which depends on Pango) so that whatever the Pango developers do in the future, does not affect me.

Correct Seth.

What is the WM you used to replace Openbox with in LXQt?

Re: Pango update: bitmap fonts display as squares

xfwm4. This actually turned out good for me because while determining what I would accept as a solution, I found out that LXDE had been replaced. The advanced model (LXQt) actually has a basic setting in Desktop Sessions where you select your desktop.

mwm is the 2nd Windows Manager that ships with LXQt, and then you choose between mwm and openbox during install.

MWM almost made me crazy. So I had to search for an independent (non-pango) WM, that would not come with a full or partial DE.

Thus xfwm4. (no worries).

Re: Pango update: bitmap fonts display as squares

If you are pointing out that I am incorrect in my assumption, why would I care? My desktop is functioning in an "advanced" manner and not feeling the effects of the pango developers; I have no use for the results of that command - so why bother. And, I have a spare WM.... mwm.

Just say what you mean, instead of giving me useless commands.

Sum totaled this is a win win.

I don't care whether you care nor am I trying to influence your behavior. But facts matter.

I stand corrected. Thank you. And, you could have just said that.

Re: Pango update: bitmap fonts display as squares

Continuing the theme of the original post, if you find yourself here because your WM has been devastated by the changes to Pango. XFWM4 with XFWM4-settings is a good drop in replacement that handles the changes to Pango well. The only differences I have observed is that a few fonts are not available - and foreign characters (Japanese and Chinese) display as boxes. Also, it works well as a stand-alone - I am not using XFCE4. (LXQt). My WM font is "Source Code Pro".

The Openbox configurations on "my" system are still toast. Pango is still being updated - and yet my LXDE DE is still illegible. And if I bring-up Openbox in LXQt, it is illegible as well.

Just trying to put forward a potential solution.

Re: Pango update: bitmap fonts display as squares

You're simply using a non-bitmap font in xfwm and a bitmap font in openbox. Otherwise xfce shows the same issues (CJK fonts) or apparently omits font's w/ empty ASCII glyphs (fonts not available)

Re: Pango update: bitmap fonts display as squares

Hi, related to this after pango and cairo update R cant no longer draw any characters on image device. PDF/LATEX works just fine. Has anyone tried downgrade pango and cairo without major breakage for the time being?

Re: Pango update: bitmap fonts display as squares

^ I still upgrade my system on a downgraded pango (1:1.43.0-2), haven't touched cairo (1.17.2+17+g52a7c79fd-1). All works fine, and I can still use PCF and BDF fonts.
Why cairo?

Re: Pango update: bitmap fonts display as squares

Thanks for your response. I saved-off a copy of the pango before font changes, I think I'm going back. Weston is impacted, as well. And Weston is where I want to be (non-Xorg - except xwayland). Hopefully the other developers that use pango will leave us some wiggle room.

Re: Pango update: bitmap fonts display as squares

gtk-demo, fontforge, as well as the qemu's "-display gtk", on my system is also broken.  Is there a single workaround for this issue that avoids these onesy-twosey fixes?

Re: Pango update: bitmap fonts display as squares

There's no "onesy-twosey" fix, pango dropped support for PCF bitmap fonts by a fundamental change in the library that cannot be undone in isolation, so you have to find other fonts (or otf variants of your preferred font) or migrate away from software that relies on pango. That's the "fix" - the only one.

Ignoring pango (and apparently also cairo) updates will increasingly lead to problems and force you to stall the entire system.
Other distros will be hit w/ the same issue as soon as they reach the relevant pango update.

No, you don't have to be happy about this.

This still works.
That said, letting pango upgrade as it wants also works; there's quite a few otb packages available, Terminus, but even most of the xorg-fonts-...

Re: Pango update: bitmap fonts display as squares

It doesn't look like there's anything really left to discuss here, and OP has been absent for >two months, so it's unlikely the thread will ever be marked as [solved].

That being the case, I'm going to go ahead and lock it now.
