[SOLVED] Gnome HiDPI shell font scaling (on Xorg)

Hi all.

I know that HiDPI is a much covered topic. I’ve browsed the forums and read the Arch HiDPI wiki page many times. But I’m still having this annoying problem with consistent font scaling on Gnome when I log in to an Xorg session, which I can't seem to resolve despite going through all the wiki steps. (FWIW, I don’t have this problem with Wayland, but I need Xorg because of my laptop's Nvidia GPU.)

My issue can be summarised with the two screenshots below. In short, I don’t see a way to consistently — or separately? — scale the GTK and shell fonts.

1) I can either use a font scaling of 1 to set the main GTK fonts correctly… but this then leaves tiny shell fonts (e.g. top bar or application menus). https://ibb.co/DWY2Qqn
2) Or, I can use a font scaling of 2 to set the shell fonts correctly… but this then leaves the GTK fonts massive. https://ibb.co/f1YPxyS

FWIW, my display scaling is already set to 200% (which is handled separately to fonts AFAIU). I’m also scaling my fonts here with Gnome Tweaks for convenience, but it’s the same if I go directly through dconf, etc.

Has anyone managed to set this up correctly, without resorting to some custom CSS for the shell fonts? Failing that, if you have a custom CSS that you’re willing to share, I’ll gladly use it. I’m currently using the adapta GTK theme if that makes a difference.

Thanks in advance.

System details: Dell Precision 5530, running Linux kernel 5.1.15 on Gnome 3.32.2.

Jumping back into this old thread just to note that the CSS route did ultimately provide the solution. I've added a section on the Arch wiki in case anyone else runs into the same problem: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Hi … ts_on_Xorg
