redshift-gtk opens but does not stay on the system tray

Hello everyone,

I am just starting out and facing this strange problem:

I installed redshift following the wiki instructions. However, when I click on the application inside the gnome activities panel, the icon pops up and the colour changes, but after a while the icon disappears and I cannot change any redshift specific settings. If I start redshift from the console, it hangs "Location: xxxxx xxxxxx". On the other hand redshift-gtk does not return anything in the terminal (in both cases the colour changes).
This behaviour is the same regardless of whether I use geoclue2 or manual latitude/longitude.

I am using xorg and gnome with an nvidia legacy driver for my graphics card.

Thank you all in advance!

Re: redshift-gtk opens but does not stay on the system tray

In case everyone is interested:

I got the issue sorted by:

uninstalling and disabling gdm
installing and enabling lightdm and gtk greeter

install xfce
keeping gnome installed(!)

uninstall nvidia drivers completely and revert to nouveau
now either redshift or f.lux show up in the system tray and can be configured just fine.
