Failed to create EFI Boot variable entry

pacman install ends like this.

(14/15) Upgrading systemd-boot...
Copied "/usr/lib/systemd/boot/efi/systemd-bootx64.efi" to "/boot/EFI/systemd/systemd-bootx64.efi".
Copied "/usr/lib/systemd/boot/efi/systemd-bootx64.efi" to "/boot/EFI/BOOT/BOOTX64.EFI".
Failed to create EFI Boot variable entry: Input/output error
error: command failed to execute correctly
(15/15) Rebuilding certificate stores...

There doesn't seem to be any other side-effects as far as I can tell.
System reboots and comes up as expected.

Any thoughts?
