I/O Error While Trying to Access A Folder

I have a NTFS external harddisk with 1TB of storage. I installed ntfs-3g and mounted it, which allowed me to open and browse it. However, after I ejected it and then plugged it again, I encountered an error: "Failed to open directory, error when getting information for file '/run/media/insciencewetrust/26B.../sudeplaylist.txt': Input/Output error." Yes, I'd love to get rid of ntfs and format it with ext4 but my backup files are in there and I need them so formatting isn't an option.

Where else are they?  If these same files don't also reside on some other accessible storage medium, then these are not backup files, they're just files.  And if you need them (i.e., they're important), then you really should have an actual backup copy.  This is especially true as one potential cause of the error you are seeing could be early signs of the drive failing - I'd certainly not jump to this as a likely diagnosis yet, but it's in the set of possible explanations.

Step 0 for this issue would first be creating an actual backup of your important files.  And at that point, you'd be free to reformat that drive as you wish and put the files back on it.

I recently switched to Arch on my desktop and therefore those were the only copies. How can I create a backup at this point?

Specifically, I have no idea, as only you know how much data is there and what other devices you have at your disposal.

Have you tried unmounting and remounting the 1TB drive again?  Do you get the exact same error repeatedly, or do you get related errors?  Or does it work sometimes?

Re: I/O Error While Trying to Access A Folder

Please post a complete dmesg after attempting to access such files and also see https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/SMART
If you're lucky, it's a bus error. If not, the disk is toast…

I tried it, gives the exact same error.

I installed it and tried to use smart using the command below but it didn't return me anything. Maybe I am doing something wrong.

smartctl --info /dev/sda | grep 'SMART support is:'

I couldn't run a test either, I am not sure what exactly is a -T permissive option.

smartctl 7.0 2018-12-30 r4883 [x86_64-linux-5.3.7-arch1-1-ARCH] (local build)
Copyright (C) 2002-18, Bruce Allen, Christian Franke, www.smartmontools.org

Read Device Identity failed: scsi error unsupported field in scsi command

A mandatory SMART command failed: exiting. To continue, add one or more '-T permissive' options.

I wasn't sure which part to copy so I copied it all, pardon me.

Re: I/O Error While Trying to Access A Folder

Sure it's sda?
sdf is KINGSTON SA400S37120G (2 partitions), sdg is Seagate  Expansion (1 partition) - sda looks more like the drive of your installed system.

There're no I/O errors in that log, not even an NTFS message. (And it's not complete, at least the head is missing)

Also run smartctl as root or sudo.

My bad, I copied the command from the wiki and put it here but I know it is /dev/sdg and typed that on my terminal.

I already ran smartctl as sudo.

Re: I/O Error While Trying to Access A Folder

Post the output of "sudo smartctl -a /dev/sdg" (ensure the device didn't change in the meantime)

What about the log? It seems to end right after you attached the device and doesn't suggest mount or access or IO errors.

[insciencewetrust@anarchy ~]$ sudo smartctl -a /dev/sdg
[sudo] password for insciencewetrust:
smartctl 7.0 2018-12-30 r4883 [x86_64-linux-5.3.7-arch1-1-ARCH] (local build)

Read Device Identity failed: scsi error unsupported field in scsi command

A mandatory SMART command failed: exiting. To continue, add one or more '-T permissive' options.

I don't know why it doesn't show it, I remounted it after unmounting it and typed dmesg again but the last part stays the same.

You can see the error for yourself: https://i.hizliresim.com/gPGl2Z.png

Re: I/O Error While Trying to Access A Folder

Cut out the GUI FM.
Can you enter the path in a bash?
Can you "file /run/media/…/filename.txt?"
What about "stat /run/media/…/filename.txt?"
Is only that file affected?

Edit, stat request.

Edit, stat request.

I actually tried to delete that file using the terminal (sudo rm) but I got the same error.

So, "file..." returns this:

/run/media/insciencewetrust/26B170820337058D/sudeplaylist.txt: cannot open `/run/media/insciencewetrust/26B170820337058D/sudeplaylist.txt' (Input/output error)

And "stat..." returns this:

stat: cannot stat '/run/media/insciencewetrust/26B170820337058D/sudeplaylist.txt': Input/output error

I can access folders in the harddisk though, here is a stat of one directory:

Corrupted filesystem, probably not the disk. Run a filesystem check on windows.
I'd worry about the "Fotoğraflar" directory…

Ok I'll update once I get my hands on a Windows device. Thank you for your help.

So I found my oldest laptop which runs Fedora and tried to open it from there, which was successful. Apparently the filesystem was fine and the problem is related to my Arch setups, as I tried to open it on both my laptop and my desktop.

Re: I/O Error While Trying to Access A Folder

ntfs or ntfs-3g mount?
Parameters? (essentially the output of "mount" on either system)
Did you run a filesystem check?
