[SOLVED] ALSA + Jack or PulseAudio to run a RME Babyface Pro Soundcard

I'm looking for some hours for a solution for my Babyface Pro card in ArchLinux.

I've already found out that it requires Class Complimant mode to recognize the sound card at all.

The alsamixer does not show soundcontrols on the soundcard.

I've already installed alsa and alsa-plugins. In addition, jack and qjackctl. In the settings of Jack, I have selected the sound card. There are no connection possibilities at this point except the Midi channels.

Does anyone have the same sound card and can help me with the setup in Arch Linux?

Re: [SOLVED] ALSA + Jack or PulseAudio to run a RME Babyface Pro Soundcard

Thanks for the fast respond.

amixer -c0

returns nothing

speaker-test -Dhw:0 -c2
Playback device is hw: 0
Stream parameters are 48000 Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
Use 16 octaves of pink noise
Sample format not supported: The argument is invalid
Error while setting the hardware parameters: The argument is invalid

This line is running:

speaker-test -D:0 -Dplug:front -c2

but there is no sound output.

Re: [SOLVED] ALSA + Jack or PulseAudio to run a RME Babyface Pro Soundcard

I've found this solution for an older version of the sound card

https://wiki.linuxaudio.org/hw/rme_babyface

but I can't run this command:

 jackd -P79 -dalsa -dhw:Pro70799463 -r48000 -p32 -n2 -s

Install the realtime-privileges package, add yourself to the realtime group and log in again. That should automagically allow jack to get the priority levels it wants.

Re: [SOLVED] ALSA + Jack or PulseAudio to run a RME Babyface Pro Soundcard

Thanks man, this seems to work.
I'm just surprised that "aplay -l" now shows no ALSA channels. ( like it's shown here )
The firewire error annoys because I do not even need it. The interface is connected by USB2.

jackd -P79 -dalsa -dhw:Pro70799463 -r48000 -p32 -n2 -s

When i start speaker-test, it's blocked by the server.

When i start audio from firefox i get many errors from the jack-server:

jackd -P79 -dalsa -dhw:Pro70799463 -r192000 -p1024 -n2 -s

... but still NO SOUND -.-

How can I continue here?

Re: [SOLVED] ALSA + Jack or PulseAudio to run a RME Babyface Pro Soundcard

speaker-test isn't going to work while jack is running b/c it takes over the hardware, unless you have ALSA set up to go through jack for its audio. And that's a whole other thread where I'm still working on debugging getting that working completely.

Does speaker-test work without any sound servers (pulse, jack) running?

Yes, but i can't hear any sound.

Strange, this command "speaker-test -Dhw:0 -c2" doesn't work (look at my 2. post)

But "speaker-test -dhw:0 -c2" is running, with following output

speaker-test 1.1.9

A speaker on the analog output provides sound!
As I change the channel to the headphone (on the hardware) no signal arrives.
How to change the subdevice on "speaker-test"?

Re: [SOLVED] ALSA + Jack or PulseAudio to run a RME Babyface Pro Soundcard

According to the manual, when in compliant mode

Playback will use analog outputs 1 and 2, or even more channels if the app supports such op-eration. The Babyface Pro onboard mixer can copy the output signal 1/2 to outputs 3/4, SPDIF and ADAT simultaneously, see chapter 34 - Copy Mode.

I think it talks about how to set that up on page 91 of the manual.

Edit: UNLESS it's seeing all the 'devices' in ALSA.

if you do

cat /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/sub0/hw_params

what do you get? The folders might be slightly different but basically you're looking for a hw_params file in there. If you're seeing more than 2 channels than you just have to set up JACK to use the correct number of channels (or do speaker-test with -c numberofchannels).
