Can't turn external monitor off and back on

Hi!

When I switch my external monitor (DP) off and back on or it just goes to standby after a minute, I can't get it on again using mouse wiggling or keypresses (monitor says No Signal).
What kind of works (most of the time, fails in unclear circumstances) is running xrandr commands manually with some keybindings.
On Ubuntu live-image this works flawlessly. I guess there is some additional stuff going on in the background.

How can I get "this" working? Or how is it being done in Ubuntu?
From the wiki article on xrandr I just find autorandr as a possibility but that is probably not what happens there.

Thanks a lot!
