mono and dotgnu share some files. plz help me on this

I'm doing some DotGNU Portable.NET packages, and some executable files, are called the same with MONO. I have two alternatives, either to replace them (afterall they do the same job!) {and how do I do this?} or I can configure DotGNU with prefix=/opt/dotgnu/ but then I have to set the $MANPATH to see to /opt/dotgnu too. and how will I do this permanently? am I allowed to write to /etc/profile and how do I do this? thanks in advance

you can look at the java -package or gnome-common, etc.

as for the rest conflicts=() would make sure tha only one of the two could be installed at aany one time.
