Sony WH-1000XM3 Bluetooth headphones won't connect

I'm trying to use my Sony WH-1000XM3 Bluetooth headphones with Arch Linux. I have a Bluetooth USB dongle by Trendnet (it kinda looks like this one). I dual boot with Windows 10, and in W10 this adapter works with the headphones just fine. I also have a laptop with Bluetooth built-in (running Manjaro XFCE, with blueman) and the headphones also work fine on that. On Arch, on the other hand, it won't even show up in the list when scanning for Bluetooth devices.

I thought that maybe I need an LE scan, since the device sometimes shows up with "LE_" prepended to its name when connecting on Manjaro (it then gets its normal name back upon successful connection). So I tried following this section from the Arch Wiki, but when I try sudo hcitool lescan, I get "Set scan parameters failed: Input/output error" and nothing happens (the same thing occurs if I run it as su).

It's not an rfkill problem, either. If I run rfkill list, I get:

0: hci0: Bluetooth
        Soft blocked: no
        Hard blocked: no

Out of curiosity, I tried booting into Manjaro from a USB stick to see if the connection would work from there. But strangely enough, the headphones wouldn't even show up in the list if I tried that on my laptop.

Running lshw gives me the following information about my Bluetooth dongle:

*-usb:4
    description: Bluetooth wireless interface
    product: Bluetooth Dongle (HCI mode)
    vendor: Cambridge Silicon Radio, Ltd
    physical id: 8
    bus info: usb@2:8
    version: 52.76
    capabilities: bluetooth usb-2.00
    configuration: driver=btusb speed=12Mbit/s

And on my laptop:

*-usb:2
    description: Bluetooth wireless interface
    vendor: Intel Corp.
    physical id: 7
    bus info: usb@1:7
    version: 0.01
    capabilities: bluetooth usb-2.00
    configuration: driver=btusb maxpower=100mA speed=12Mbit/s

On my laptop, this is the only software I needed:

[jelle@jelle-manjaro ~]$ pacman -Q | grep blue
blueman 2.1.1-1
bluez 5.51-2
bluez-libs 5.51-2
pulseaudio-bluetooth 13.0-2

I'd like to blame the Bluetooth adapter, but this same adapter gets the job done on Windows so it has to be possible to use it in Arch. Any help would be hugely appreciated.

Re: Sony WH-1000XM3 Bluetooth headphones won't connect

There have been a few kernel level issues here, which kernel are you running on Manjaro and which on Arch? You might want to try and align that. You should also post/check dmesg when attempting to scan for devices.

Re: Sony WH-1000XM3 Bluetooth headphones won't connect

Thank you for the reply. Manjaro uses Linux 4.19.80-1 and Arch uses Linux 5.3.8.1-1, so I'll try to switch Arch to Linux LTS and see if that works. In the meantime, this was the dmesg output while scanning for devices, but personally I don't really know how to extract useful information from that.

Unfortunately, switching kernel did not make a difference. This was my dmesg output while scanning.

Re: Sony WH-1000XM3 Bluetooth headphones won't connect

You might try installing booth bluez-utils and bluez-tools which can provide a nearly unlimited supply of esoteric bluetooth information and settings. Here's an example for comparison of the output from btmgmt-->info.... hci1 being a no name BT dongle that gives me a headache at times and hci0 being my intel 7260-AC wireless/bt card which just works 99% of the time.

[mgmt]# info
Index list with 2 items
hci1: Primary controller
addr 11:11:11:11:11:11 version 2 manufacturer 57 class 0x100104
supported settings: powered connectable fast-connectable discoverable bondable link-security br/edr debug-keys
current settings: powered bondable br/edr
name pavilion500-070 #2
short name
hci0: Primary controller
addr FC:F8:AE:A1:C6:55 version 6 manufacturer 2 class 0x100104
supported settings: powered connectable fast-connectable discoverable bondable link-security ssp br/edr hs le advertising secure-conn debug-keys privacy configuration static-addr
current settings: powered connectable discoverable bondable ssp br/edr le secure-conn
name HP Pavilion 500-070
short name
hci0: Configuration options
supported options: public-address
missing options:

Post the output if you like. "sudo systool -av -c bluetooth" would be another good one to see.

Design is a funny word. Some people think design means how it looks. But, of course, if you dig deeper, it’s how it really works. You have to grok what it is all about.
