Out of the blue, I decided to have a look at my dmesg and I noticed this warning:
[174.009629] WARNING: CPU: 3 PID: 3359 at fs/btrfs/inode.c:9825 btrfs_rename2.cold+0xcc/0x183 [btrfs]
and some further output:
[ 174.009684] CPU: 3 PID: 3359 Comm: Thread (pooled) Tainted: G OE 5.3.8-arch1-1 #1
[ 174.009685] Hardware name: LENOVO 4291LZ8/4291LZ8, BIOS 8DET70WW (1.40 ) 05/14/2015
[ 174.009715] RIP: 0010:btrfs_rename2.cold+0xcc/0x183 [btrfs]
It looks like some filesystem error (please correct me if I'm wrong). I am hoping to do a btrfs check but the filesystem needs to be unmounted to do so. How do I go about doing a btrfs check if my root partition mounted? Would this mean chrooting? But that would also mean downloading the btrfs-progs to the installation media I'm chrooting on?
Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

Just create Arch Live USB and boot from it. It conveniently has btrfs-progs I believe. You'll see your drive under /dev/sdXX -- unmounted by default. No need to mount or chroot - just start doing the checks as needed.

Thanks romstor. Yes of course, I shouldn't chroot - that would be mounting the partitions again. I still have a fairly up-to-date Arch USB and will work on it.

The warning has disappeared after subsequent reboot. I guess I can mark this as solved. I might do a btrfs check anyway just to make sure.
