[SOLVED] Peformance degradation with bumblebee/primus nvidia 440.36

I rolled back to nvidia 435.21 and kernel 5.3.8, and that seems to have cleared up my issue as well

The very strange thing for me, though, is everything works great for the first 10 minutes of GPU being powered on and driver (440.31) being loaded, and then the program running via bumblebee drops to 1 FPS. That 10 minutes is always consistent, whether I'm running 3D programs, or use "optirun gedit" to start the GPU then load up glxspheres64 just before 10 minute mark to see the drop. It's like clockwork, which leads me to believe something is timing out.

I'm still not sure if this is what OP is seeing or not, and don't want to hijack if it's different...

Not yet -- I ended up installing the legacy nvidia-390xx drivers so I have a functioning card without having to have a rolled back driver & kernel. I agree with an above poster, I think this should likely go upstream to Nvidia -- I might do that when I get some time to review/sanitize the log data that the Nvidia reporting tool kicks out (which they ask for over on the Nvidia forums), unless someone gets to it first.

I am having the same issue, like clockwork, most things drop to 1 fps after 10 minutes. I'm downloading the rollback files now, and will test it out soon

When I rolled back my packages bumblebee started giving me:

I had that same error by rolling back to the wrong packages. Make sure you're on linux 5.3.8.1-1 and nvidia 435.21-15.

Also, I feel that people in this thread are describing two problems. I have the same problem IAmRoko reported - after about 10 minutes of running any application on the NVIDIA card the application goes down to 1FPS. The original OP, if I'm not mistaken, seems to be describing a general lack of performance.

For those with the 10 minute problem, the packages I mentioned remove the problem. Has anyone tried nvidia 440.36-4?

That's not gonna help that's just a rebuild against the newer kernel. But I do agree we should split the two different discussions.

Thanks, make sense... As more details came out it looks like the problems are not the same.

I've started an upstream thread on the Nvidia forums, so if anyone can help contribute to that it will help us all figure this out.

One thing we all have in common, though, is that we're using Bumblebee, which hasn't been updated in a while. I wonder if something new rolled out for Nvidia Optimus with the new driver which needs an update in Bumblebee? Again, the 10 minute timeout is a very round number which makes me suspicious.

I've worked around it by changing /etc/bumblebee/xorg.conf.nvidia to include the following option in the "Screen" section:

Option "HardDPMS" "false"

Finally, the solution on this thread has proven to work for me:
Kernel 5.4.2
nvidia 440.36-5

[dalexandre@dalexandre fbl-rt]$ grep DPMS /etc/bumblebee/xorg.conf.nvidia 
    Option "HardDPMS" "false"

The only difference is the OP is talking about a Screen section, and I've put in the Device section (I don't have any Screen section)
