NVIDIA 440.31 Huge performance down compared to 435.21

Hi,
after i updated and rebooted my system, include nvidia 440.31 update
my games suffer huge performance down compared to using 435.21 version.
I back to 435.21 and performance has returned to normal.
I think it's a nvidia problem, but maintainer can't revert back to 435.21 for a moment NVIDIA correct it please ?

Thanks.

Re: NVIDIA 440.31 Huge performance down compared to 435.21

Those are some heavy claims, to verify the bare minimum, install mesa-demos, lib32-mesa-demos and post

pacman -Qs nvidia
pacman -Qs linux
dmesg | grep nvidia
glxinfo -B
glxinfo32 -B

and a xorg log.

Re: NVIDIA 440.31 Huge performance down compared to 435.21

Stop doing that

I haven't been  on my nvidia system yet, but which games are you seeing this with and how huge is the difference? Do you have any nonstandard xorg configurations? Which general environment are you running? Outputs look generally alright from a base perspective, but I've yet to see anyone else mentioning perf issues here.

Re: NVIDIA 440.31 Huge performance down compared to 435.21

Hi V1del, thanks to helping me.

1. I play to Overwatch with Lutris via lutris wine version
2. I only created /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/00-keyboard.conf to diable mouse acceleration :

Section "InputClass"
        Identifier "system-keyboard"
        MatchIsKeyboard "on"
        Option "XkbLayout" "fr"
EndSection

3. I use KDE-Plasma 5
4. I searched for this and not found anyone else mentioning perf issues also, but i've this problems and my mate too.

I already said but that works totaly just with rollback to 435.21 :

lib32-nvidia-utils-435.21-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz

libxnvctrl-435.21-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz

nvidia-settings-435.21-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz

opencl-nvidia-435.21-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz

lib32-opencl-nvidia-435.21-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz

nvidia-dkms-435.21-17-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz

nvidia-utils-435.21-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz

Re: NVIDIA 440.31 Huge performance down compared to 435.21

I haven't had a chance to jump on my laptop, (I'll try to post specs and usage later) but I've had issues as well. I know this is semi-useless since I don't have any data, but I'll try to post more tomorrow.

Re: NVIDIA 440.31 Huge performance down compared to 435.21

Out of curiosity, do your guys' issues happen right from boot, or do they appear after a few minutes of GPU usage?

I haven't used the discrete GPU on my laptop in a month or so, but loaded up Kerbal Space Program (using Bumblebee/Optirun) the other day, on a system that's up-to-date. It worked great initially, then after 10 minutes started suffering major lag. I can reproduce the same behavior with glxspheres64, which drops from several hundred FPS down to one or two. As best as I can tell, it seems to be offloading all the processing from the discrete GPU, as it's utilization drops to essentially zero. When I quit the program (thus shutting off the GPU, since I'm using bumblebee) and re-start again it seems to reset itself and works perfectly for another few minutes before the same issue pops up again.

Just want to see if it is a similar behaviour to what the OP is seeing before I post more in this thread, however I haven't found anything in logs yet. I may try rolling back the drivers in the meantime.

Edit to add: Doesn't appear to be a thermal issue, as the CPU throttles while maintaining good performance at 80c, while the GPU stays at a nice 65c while running glxspheres64. Plus, a month ago, it worked great and I could play KSP for hours with no issue.

Edit again (20 NOV): Updated to change "few minutes" to "10 minutes" in my problem description.

Hi,
my mate's and mine issues are only on 3D game.
No problems on 2D and on Unity Editor.

Re: NVIDIA 440.31 Huge performance down compared to 435.21

Can you (hunabku) reproduce this anywhere else other than overwatch? In general for DXVK related issues you will want to follow https://github.com/doitsujin/dxvk/issues/267 you might also want to test an updated DXVK as that reenabled a few nvidia specific things due to fixes in this driver. Maybe also try what's mentioned there and switch from fullscreen to a windowed mode variant or so.

FWIW I did test WoW with dxvk 1.4.4  wine 4.20,  SFIV wined3d CSMT, Skullgirls (native OGL 3 something I think) and TW:Warhammer II Vulkan and didn't see any noticable drops on a Nvidia GTX TITAN X

4GB are quite little VRAM in comparison, and there was a change in how the nvidia driver handles Vulkan/DXVK memory allocations so you might be seeing a regression here on cards that are strapped for VRAM (can you check with nvidia-smi? I'd assume you are probably out of or close to being out of VRAM during an overwatch stutter situation)

Probably, you'll have more useful answers by submitting your findings directly to nvidia and/or dxvk devs.

Re: NVIDIA 440.31 Huge performance down compared to 435.21

I post packages cant' be found for now, that can help to rollback :
https://mega.nz/#F!OABgSSyC!pLfuii3acT-VTrsly3Cw4g

My problem is only on Overwatch, surely from DXKV, but with the problems other have i see, i realy think 440.31 is a bad release.

Anyway thank's a lot for helping me (an others), i will wait for new NVIDIA driver release upgrade to try it.

I rolled back to nvidia 435.21 and kernel 5.3.8, and that seems to have cleared up my issue as well

The very strange thing for me, though, is everything works great for the first 10 minutes of GPU being powered on and driver (440.31) being loaded, and then the program running via bumblebee drops to 1 FPS. That 10 minutes is always consistent, whether I'm running 3D programs, or use "optirun gedit" to start the GPU then load up glxspheres64 just before 10 minute mark to see the drop. It's like clockwork, which leads me to believe something is timing out.

I'm still not sure if this is what OP is seeing or not, and don't want to hijack if it's different...

I'm having the same exact issue, also primusrun doesn't work at all but that might be a different issue. Do you have any new information?

Re: NVIDIA 440.31 Huge performance down compared to 435.21

I reinstalled my Arch totaly : all works fine with 440.31.
So i suspect a config file cause the problem, but i didn't found it because i deleted all config files and the problems occurs again.
On my bugged system, i was found a potiential track : nvidia 435.21 and 440.31 didn't load graphical interface, so needed to use nvidia-dkms to works.
Maybe can help to solve for ohers.

Re: NVIDIA 440.31 Huge performance down compared to 435.21

So, problem occurs again, solved by rolled back to 435.21.

Lutris team warned its community of issues between NVIDIA 440.xx drivers and shaders.

Dear friends, i've no issues with those drivers, but i repeat once again.
If you don't report your findings to nvidia developers, chances that the bugs will be addressed will be very low.

Re: NVIDIA 440.31 Huge performance down compared to 435.21

I did but have no response.

Lutris guy found a fix :

Tannis RootHier à 23:26
Update on shader compilation issue with a 440.xx Nvidia drivers:
While Nvidia has not yet adressed the problem and increased their default size limit for shader cache in a new driver, there's apparently a way to increase it manually.
To do that, simply add this environment variable __GL_SHADER_DISK_CACHE_SIZE with value of 2000000000 to your game configuration.
A GIF attached to this message should showcase how to do this.
This should stop the driver from discarding the shader cache and make your gameplay much smoother (at least in Overwatch). And of course, Overwatch and Battle.net were updated to include this variable in their configuration by default.

Re: NVIDIA 440.31 Huge performance down compared to 435.21

Hey,

Finally, the solution on this thread has proven to work for me: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1877264
Kernel 5.4.2
nvidia 440.36-5

[dalexandre@dalexandre fbl-rt]$ grep DPMS /etc/bumblebee/xorg.conf.nvidia
    Option "HardDPMS" "false"

The only difference is the OP is talking about a Screen section, and I've put in the Device section (I don't have any Screen section)
