Incorrect font in gtk2 apps

Hi,

I have been banging my head on this for a long time now. All text in all my gtk2 apps is being rendered as invalid characters.

This includes gimp, gtk-chtheme, password prompt when using gpg.

Reinstalling the affected apps does not help, I would rather avoid reinstalling the entire system. All other apps are fine.

Anybody seen this before?
