Who still uses nvidia-legacy?

We need to know because nVidia legacy support in Archie is going to be a nightmare, as the whole pkg conflicts with nVidia.

If very few people are using it then they can just build there own, as that works fine.

Do vote no if you do not as a % audience would be good to know!

i don't use it, though i thought i had to. my good ol' geforce2 mx works with the latest drivers.

My parents and my sister's computers both use it, but I'm not sure they need to. Sometimes it seems like only the legacy driver works, and sometimes it seems like only the up-to-date one. Confusing. I don't remember off-hand what cards they have, but one system is about six years old and the other is 4.

I do know that according to nVidia that anything with the following PCIs should need the legacy drivers:

0x0020 0x0028 0x0029 0x002C 0x002D 0x00A0 0x0100 0x0101 0x0103 0x0150 0x0151 0x0152 0x0153

I dunno if that helps anyone

With new 2.6.16.x kernel ( i have tested only with this and upper ..) nvidia-legacy drivers don't work.. you should install drivers from nvidia installer if you use custom kernel and i think that support of nvidia-legacy doesn't need..

What would nvidia-legacy drivers actually do that the "nv" driver wouldnt do?

Sure 3d performance won't be there, but aside from that I don't understand where the problem would be.

Also lets keep in mind this is Archie, not the entire ArchLinux distro.

I personally don't use them (so I admit my response is a bit biased) but I don't quite see where the problem would come in.

since kernel 2.6.18*, i don't use NVidia installer anymore, i am using nvidiafb in linux kernel code.
IMHO, it faster than closed NVidia installer in 2D, and little slower than it in 3D.

I'm still using it on my server (has an old card).
IMHO nvidia-legacy should stay in official repos but not included in Archie because of conflict with nvidia.

I seem to recall the lagacy driver were MUCH better for performance in ET -- that was just something i heard.

Can anyone confirm with newest nvidia driver?

i use it  but i wouldnt worry so much about it being in archie myself
i think a live enviroment isnt where a lot of people are  gonna be concerned with getting all the benefits of using the nvidia driver . to me a live distro is for showing others how easy running linux can be & recover a borked install.
thats just my thought on it though

To be honest, as you say, I have to wonder how worthwhile it is to install any "proper" drivers - can't people just use the drivers included in the kernel?  You may not get fancy GL stuff but it is a live-cd!

Still, it's about choice, so I have created the Archie specific packages and the script that makes them all work.  Now I just need to rejig the implementation after the "pacman install on the fly" method was found to max out the swap on my system when running qemu!

At least this way people could, in theory, run GL demos now

I don't use it, but that is only because my TNT2 Ultra (which I'm amazed still works to be honest) is in the computer my parents borrow from me, and thus is a Windows machine.  When they are done with it, and assuming the hardware still works (it's quite old, socket A 1.2GHz Duron with DDR100 RAM, old skool!), I'd use the legacy driver.  Or run the machine as a headless storage server..
