You should not need b43-firmware. In fact you should be blacklisting b43 and ssb in order to use wl. However, I doubt this is relevant. If you are connecting, you have the drivers set up properly, this sounds more like a network management tool problem.
What do you mean by "stops working"? Do you just lose internet access - can you ping domain names - can you ping IP addresses? Is the interface down, does the interface disappear? Describe the actual problem.
