second monitor problem - help me understand logs

There are plenty of threads about "second monitor configuration". That is why I do not ask you to help me fix that but to help me understand the logs I gathered.

The first thing that hit me was: even though my monitor is detected by xrandr, monitor is not listed. Below is what I mean by that.

Some posts do mention the second monitor should be listed. Why? Why is it not listed here but still connected?

Another question is: what is this "modesetting"? Is it name of some driver, a technology, an api? I can see that (whatever it is) in xorg logs.

What is the difference between modeset(0) and modeset(G0)? I hope for explanation in simple terms.

I did experiment with xrandr but even though the display seems to extend onto second monitor, the monitor itself does not detect any signal.

Is it possible to make any conclusion based on the logs above? How would you interpret the situation? Is there any other source of relevant information I missed?

A big narrowing down factor is that nvidia card is a 3D display controller, which means that it is not connected to any screens, and irrelevant to the task of getting a second monitor to run.

From the rest of the logs it does look like the monitor is generally enumerated properly, do you have another system to test the monitor and/or the cable on? Do you have another cable to test with?

Edit:

On second glance, at least it shouldn't, however from the xorg log it does look like it gets busy enumerating the secondary screen (modeset(G0)) is the nvidia card, modeset(0) the intel card. What's your output for

xrandr --listproviders

Also to properly ensure a vanilla state you might want to remove the nvidia packages instead of manually fumbling in package set up config files.

Modesetting, according to wikipedia:

Mode setting is a software operation that activates a display mode (screen resolution, color depth, and refresh rate) for a computer's display controller.

The Article

The cat of /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/* is not especially clear on where each config file starts/ends. I think it may help to cat them each individually.
I'm not really sure about the other questions, sorry.

man modesetting has info about the Xorg modesetting driver (it comes with xorg-server package)


Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.
