Suspend not working if laptop is on A/C

Hi there, ever since installing Arch a couple of months ago I am dealing with a suspend issue I don't seem to be able to fix.
The issue is that suspend will work just fine as long as the machine is on battery. However, when power is connected, the machine will switch off and immedeatly come out of suspend again, 100% reproducable.

After spending quite some time with reading through suspend issues here and elsewhere, testing and searching I feel like I have exhausted my options and was hopping I could get some hints on where to check next from more experienced users here.
Further down is a list of things I checked so far but right now the only thing which I can identify to be different between battery and AC is that new USB devices (1-6 Intel Corp.) get created as soon as I am on AC:

On battery

thomas@hermes:~$ lsusb.py
usb1              1d6b:0002 09 1IF  [USB 2.00,   480 Mbps,   0mA] (xhci-hcd 0000:00:14.0) hub
  1-10              0a5c:5834 00 4IFs [USB 1.10,    12 Mbps, 100mA] (Broadcom Corp 5880 0123456789ABCD)
  1-11              1bcf:2b91 ef 2IFs [USB 2.00,   480 Mbps, 500mA] (CNFEH63N03614000F312 Integrated_Webcam_HD)
usb2              1d6b:0003 09 1IF  [USB 3.00,  5000 Mbps,   0mA] (xhci-hcd 0000:00:14.0) hub

On A/C

thomas@hermes:~$ lsusb.py
usb1              1d6b:0002 09 1IF  [USB 2.00,   480 Mbps,   0mA] (xhci-hcd 0000:00:14.0) hub
  1-6               8087:0a2b e0 2IFs [USB 2.00,    12 Mbps, 100mA] (Intel Corp.)
  1-10              0a5c:5834 00 4IFs [USB 1.10,    12 Mbps, 100mA] (Broadcom Corp 5880 0123456789ABCD)
  1-11              1bcf:2b91 ef 2IFs [USB 2.00,   480 Mbps, 500mA] (CNFEH63N03614000F312 Integrated_Webcam_HD)
usb2              1d6b:0003 09 1IF  [USB 3.00,  5000 Mbps,   0mA] (xhci-hcd 0000:00:14.0) hub

So my current hope is that these devices somehow prevent suspend, but I don't really know how to go further from here, actually don't really understand how adding power can magically create new USB ports in the first place?

Here's what I tried up to now:
- Every single kernel as they became available over the last couple of months, including the LTS ones
- At some point I swithced from nVidia only to Bumblebee
- Checked tlp (with and w/o AC)
    systemctl stop tlp.service
    systemctl stop tlp-sleep.service
    systemctl suspend

- Checked NetworkManager  (with and w/o AC)
    systemctl stop NetworkManager.service
    systemctl stop NetworkManager-dispatcher.service
    systemctl suspend

- Been following this https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=242664
    ran the lsusb.py script to identify which device gets added when AC power is on, happens to be the same 00:14 as in the thread.
    created the script (+x)
    No success

tlp just gets started again when you suspend, you can disable it from /etc/default/tlp ( TLP_ENABLE=0 iirc, i dont currently have it installed), i usually just mask it when i want to see if an issue is tlp related. if it's not just unmask it afterwards.

systemctl mask tlp
systemctl mask tlp-sleep

Re: Suspend not working if laptop is on A/C

Thanks for chipping in @dglt, but unfortunately this didn't change things.
Masked both services, rebooted and ran systemctl suspend with and w/o power connected. The system stayed off w/o power, and came back immedeatly with power connected.

I also tried docked and undocked, but that didn't matter either. It's power which seems to make the difference, no matter if connected directly or via the docking station.

Do you have BIOS option to power-on when AC is plugged? To test, what happens if you suspend on battery then plug AC?

Re: Suspend not working if laptop is on A/C

Remove power, suspend, plug power back in, is exactly what I do right now. The machine will suspend and stay powered off.
This is actually my workaround when the machine is undocked, but when docked it's anoying to fiddle with cables.

But your BIOS idea is a good one! Suspend used to work when running Manjaro earlier this year, and I think I did a BIOS upgrade around the same time I switched to Arch. Maybe this has changed a default setting...

Re: Suspend not working if laptop is on A/C

even if there is no "wake on ac power" you can still try other bios options for charging behavior. or possibly "wake on usb" if the ac power changes how that behaves, just a guess though and nothing to support the theory.

Re: Suspend not working if laptop is on A/C

~20 reboots later it looks like it's not the BIOS settings. All the "wake on xx" settings were off but I did try switching some back and forth but unfortunately no luck. Good idea though…

Re: Suspend not working if laptop is on A/C

looking at the journal logs suspend is behaving differently when your on AC power unless the ac log output was not complete?  bumblebee is not trying to enable the gpu before suspend, network is not going down, and even that script you have run on suspend only tries to run when your on battery even though the script fails btw

Sep 25 21:41:43 hermes systemd-sleep[91264]: /usr/lib/systemd/system-sleep/10-usb_suspend_workaround.sh: line 8: echo: write error: No such device
Sep 25 21:41:43 hermes [91265]: /usr/lib/systemd/system-sleep/10-usb_suspend_workaround.sh failed with exit status 1.

but this is due to the extra usb device only visible when AC power is connected, yes?

edit:
you can also try editing /etc/systemd/sleep.conf and trying different sleep/suspend/hibernate modes.

Re: Suspend not working if laptop is on A/C

Indeed, the script was meant to deal with these new USB devices and is a leftover from one of the many attempts to solve this issue.

It didn't work but I kept it just in case I wanted to return to it.

 $ cat /usr/lib/systemd/system-sleep/10-usb_suspend_workaround.sh
#!/bin/bash

# All commented out as it doesn't seem to work anyway
PCI_DEV="0000:00:17.0"

case $1/$2 in
  pre/*)
    # echo "Going to $2..."
#    echo "$PCI_DEV" > /sys/bus/pci/drivers/xhci_hcd/unbind
    ;;
  post/*)
    # echo "Waking up from $2..."
#    echo "$PCI_DEV" > /sys/bus/pci/drivers/xhci_hcd/bind
    ;;
esac

I think I may as well delete it....gone...

I'll see what I can do with these, at the moment all entries are commented out.

In parallel I went ahead and created a new log.
I used logger to add bookmarks to the log. If you search for "Logger" you should find the strings I added. Like in line 1.
First attempt is on battery, which worked. Second one with power connected and an immedeate reboot.
Both suspend attempts were initated with systemctl suspend

Have to say I really apprechiate your help!

Re: Suspend not working if laptop is on A/C

from a root shell,

echo XHC > /proc/acpi/wakeup

then try suspending as you normally would, if that works you can use a systemd service to make it persistent through reboots or add it to sysctl overrides but im not sure how that particular one would be handled since /proc/acpi/wakup contains numerous values. if it does not work then post the full output of

cat /proc/acpi/wakeup

Tried with power plugged in, unfortunately no luck:

sudo su
echo XHC > /proc/acpi/wakeup
systemctl suspend
cat /proc/acpi/wakeup

Edit: Additional info.
I just double checked again. XHC is disabled after I run the echo command, but comes up as enabled after the system wakes up again. As mentioned in the AskUbuntu reference link you added.

Edit2:
Tried a few more times, XHC now stays disabled, but suspend is still not working...the list of enabled devices seems to stay the same no matter if on power or battery.
The number of total entries stays the same too:

Re: Suspend not working if laptop is on A/C

after running that command, this line should show as disabled

XHC	  S0	*enabled

you can try the other S3 (deep) values as well, though at least 1 should remain enabled so you can come out of suspend.  not sure why XHC is shown as S0 though, does this value change when on or off AC power or does it remain the same?

try disabling "LID0" and "PBTN" one at a time to see if it's one of those causing the issue, you can try with/without "XHC" for each as well.

this method makes more sense, grabbed it from an xps 13 wiki. you should be able to test with other device paths as well.

To make the change permanent, put a file to /etc/tmpfiles.d:

/etc/tmpfiles.d/disable-xhci-wakeup.conf
w /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:14.0/power/wakeup - - - - disabled

Edit:
Did some more reading on the power states, things seem to be all set correctly.
I also ran some more tests on those mysterious USB drives wich appear when power is plugged in.
I see them disapear when I run tlp bat

Nov 28 09:40:15 hermes kernel: usb 1-6: USB disconnect, device number 19

But even then the machine will wake up immedeatly. Likely conclusion is the issue has got nothing to do with those USB devices.

Edit2:
I mentioned in my opening post that suspend used to work when running Manjaro earlier this year. Well, I tried a Manjaro live USB just now, won't work either. Tried Ubuntu as well, just in case, but same result, just a bit slower :-).

Re: Suspend not working if laptop is on A/C

bbswitch maybe? you can try other options besides bumblebee that dont use bbswitch for handling gpu power management and see if that is whats causing it, it wouldnt be the first time.

i made this for use with manjaro when i was still using it but it also works great on arch. there's 3 versions depending on which DM your using (lightdm,gdm,sddm) and does not use bbswitch for power management which is the cause for most of the bumblebee related issues. again, this is just a theory that bbswitch might be the problem based on it causing suspend issues for others in the past including myself. ignore the manjaro specific instructions like MHWD for driver installation, if you already have nvidia drivers installed you dont need to reinstall them just make sure there are no conflicting configurations in the listed directories.

https://github.com/dglt1/optimus-switch (lightdm version)
https://github.com/dglt1/optimus-switch-gdm
https://github.com/dglt1/optimus-switch-sddm

there's also prime
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PRIME

if you dont want to go that route you could try different acpi_osi parameters that most optimus laptops need for use with bumblebee, this guide has a good explanation of which ones to use.

Re: Suspend not working if laptop is on A/C

Thanks for sticking with me @dglt. I don't think it's bbswitch though, as I experieced this issue before I switched to bumblebee. In fact, when I tried Manjaro and Ubuntu running from USB earlier today, there will have been no bbswitch and the graphics driver on live USBs is Nouveau instead of native nVidia I think.
I'll review your acpi_osi link!
But now that I confirmed the issue is also present on Ubuntu I may try my luck with Dell in parallel. Maybe it's a firmware issue...

Re: Suspend not working if laptop is on A/C

i didnt know it was a dell, try these parameters first 1 at a time. you can also try using each with acpi_osi=!

acpi_rev_override=1
acpi_rev_override=2
acpi_rev_override=3
acpi_rev_override=4
acpi_rev_override=5

Re: Suspend not working if laptop is on A/C

Went through all 5 acpi_rev_override options, none would make a difference unfortunately. I did check with cat /proc/cmdline after each boot to make sure the parameter was active.
Had a bit of a situation when I did the 5 options with acpi_osi added, the system would not boot into graphical mode any longer. So I just logged on to tty and tried to resume from there. Didn't work either and on coming out of suspend, the laptop got stuck with a black screen.
After trying all 5 options with acpi_osi and a crash each time, I wanted to start normaly again and the system still would not boot into graphical mode...after a bit of frantic searching trhough error logs I noticed that somehow switchable graphics got disabled during my tests, likely when adding acpi_osi as this is when the non graphic mode started.

After enabling the BIOS setting again I am back in business, phew :-)

Re: Suspend not working if laptop is on A/C

No worries! I really appreciate your help. Unless someone else here has got some other ideas I will take it up with Dell ...their Linux support was pretty effective last time when I was dealing with an incompatible SSD.

Edit: Tried another approach seen in another thread
1. Set runlevel to multi-user.target to remove all potential DE influence
2. Switch off all enabled acpi events again one by one followed by a suspend attempt

cat /proc/acpi/wakeup | grep enabled
echo PEG0 | sudo tee /proc/acpi/wakeup
sudo systemctl suspend
echo RP09 | sudo tee /proc/acpi/wakeup
sudo systemctl suspend
echo RP02 | sudo tee /proc/acpi/wakeup
sudo systemctl suspend
echo RP03 | sudo tee /proc/acpi/wakeup
sudo systemctl suspend
echo XHC | sudo tee /proc/acpi/wakeup
sudo systemctl suspend
echo LID0 | sudo tee /proc/acpi/wakeup
sudo systemctl suspend
echo PBTN | sudo tee /proc/acpi/wakeup
sudo systemctl suspend

Unfortunately still no success, laptop wakes up immedeatly

Also booted from a Ubuntu 18.04 installation stick again in case I need to open a case with Dell and have to demonstrate that a supported OS is showing the same issue.
Same issue :-(

Re: Suspend not working if laptop is on A/C

1. completely uninstall TLP (and any similar power management tool)
2. can you "rtcwake -m mem -s 60" (this should sleep for 60 seconds and then automatically wake up)

Re: Suspend not working if laptop is on A/C

Cool!

Went ahead and switched back to multi_user.target just to be sure nothing Plasma DE gets in the way.

yay -R tlp-rdw
yay -R tlp
sudo systemctl suspend # Didn't work
sudo rtcwake -m mem -s 60  # Didn't work either

But after waking up I noticed this error:

Dez 27 19:16:51 hermes kernel: tpm tpm0: tpm_try_transmit: send(): error -5

I have seen it before in journalctl but didn't really connect it with my issue, but now that it was the sole message which showed up right after waking up I went out and searched for the error. Couldn't find anything but finally ended up disabling TPM in my BIOS.
Unfortunately, all it did was to remove the error, but the immedeate wakeup is still there. If anything it wakes up faster than before.

Then I thought, ok, after my many reboots the ACPI wakeup events are probably back to default, and they were:

cat /proc/acpi/wakeup | grep enabled
PEG0	  S4	*enabled   pci:0000:00:01.0
RP09	  S4	*enabled   pci:0000:00:1d.0
RP02	  S4	*enabled   pci:0000:00:1c.0
RP03	  S4	*enabled   pci:0000:00:1c.2
XHC	  S0	*enabled   pci:0000:00:14.0
LID0	  S3	*enabled   platform:PNP0C0D:00
PBTN	  S3	*enabled   platform:PNP0C0C:00

So I went ahead an disabled them again, one by one like below:

echo PEG0 | sudo tee /proc/acpi/wakeup
cat /proc/acpi/wakeup | grep enabled # To double check it's gone
sudo rtcwake -m mem -s 60

Unfortunately no success either...

Re: Suspend not working if laptop is on A/C

I do, haven't bootet into it for ages though. It's on a separate drive.
I am using Systemd-boot as boot manager.

$ lsblk
NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT
sda            8:0    0   1,8T  0 disk
├─sda1         8:1    0  97,7G  0 part
└─sda2         8:2    0   1,7T  0 part
  └─luksData 254:1    0   1,7T  0 crypt /media/data
mmcblk0      179:0    0  29,7G  0 disk
└─mmcblk0p1  179:1    0  29,7G  0 part  /run/media/thomas/3638-3938
zram0        253:0    0   7,8G  0 disk  [SWAP]
nvme0n1      259:0    0   477G  0 disk
├─nvme0n1p1  259:1    0   511M  0 part  /boot

  └─luksOS   254:0    0 476,4G  0 crypt /mnt

sda1 is the windows partition.

Re: Suspend not working if laptop is on A/C

Please ensure to disable https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Du … ibernation because iff windows is hibernating, this can throw the BIOS acpi off.
