I restarted Shotwell tens of times, and I moved several times the picture files between Images/ and Images/Photos (I wanted to force a database rebuild), and finally Shotwell stopped crashing. I have no idea why.
I changed the status to [SOLVED], but this is not of particular help.

I suggest to file a ticket to upstream Shotwell maillist/bug system. It will help to find out the root case of the issue and hopefully fix it correctly.
