Hey all,
I've been having sound issues for quite some time with my laptop and figured it's time to ask for help.
Anytime the kernel has been updated (ie: 5.3.12 -> 5.3.13 or 5.3.13 -> 5.4.1), I am unable to play any sound on the most recent kernel. I've been forced to downgrade the kernel to the previous version to play sound. This includes kernels that previously had no sound (ie: I get sound on 5.3.13 perfectly now). When attempting to check/set sound options through pavucontrol, the audio stream will show activity when playing a song, but no sound comes from the speakers. As expected, running speaker-test provides no sound either. No speakers are muted in alsamixer, nor is the sound volume set too low either.
Some additional research showed me a common trend with sound and the snd_hda_intel.dmic_detect=0 option needing to be set. Unfortunately, setting the option in the bootloader causes no sound card to be detected, an inability for pavucontrol to connect to pulseaudio, and no sound options in the gnome sound panel. I'm currently working my way through the wiki's sound troubleshooting page in hopes of finding something new. Does anyone have any advice on something to try?

I'm updating this with some more information from troubleshooting and I've come across some other interesting things that may or may not be related.
Using the LTS kernel breaks sound even more completely, removing all options for sound
It's possible to have sound through bluetooth when on the most recent kernel.
Plugging headphones into my headphone jack does not work no matter the kernel version (maybe broken?)
Waking from a suspend is impossible on the most recent kernel (different issue I assume, just putting it here for my future diagnosing)
Pulseaudio does start on login
$ systemctl --user pulseaudio

Restarting the first time had all sound cards missing, restarting a second time has my headphones considered perpetually plugged in.

What are you using to actively check whether sound does or doesn't work? When the not working situation arises what are your outputs for
sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
aplay -lL
amixer -c0

Hi V1del,
I've been keeping an eye on pavuctl's playback, which does register sound as being played. No sound comes out of any speakers though. Currently pavuctl claims that headphones are plugged in and available (although they do not work) and speakers are unavailable.
Here's the output from the commands while trying to play something with no sound coming through the speakers.
sudo fuser -v /dev/snd*
