[Solved] 5.4 series kernels cause failures w/root FS is on NVMe device

I have 4 machines with identical hardware configurations, except that 2 of them have SATA M.2 drives, and 2 of them have NVMe M.2 drives. These drives are the only mass storage on the systems.

When the 5.4.1 kernel upgrade happened, the machines with NVMe drives could no longer bring up their root filesystems. The boot process proceeds normally until the initrdfs tries to mount the actual root filesystem, which fails with an error like:

And it's right. An `ls` of /dev shows that there are no nvme devices. There aren't any devices starting with `n` at all, so of course the partition UUID can't be found smile

This morning I saw that kernel 5.4.2 was out, so I manually upgraded after booting from install media. Same issue.

After that I grabbed the 5.3.13.1 kernel packages from the arch archive and manually installed those. Upon reboot, those two systems could see their root filesystems again. They are now back up and in service, but obviously this is a patch rather than a solution.

Has something changed in the 5.4 kernel build process? Are NVMe drivers not being built? Is there some new step required that I don't know about? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

If you use the fallback initrd is the issue still present?
If so can you dump the dmesg from the emergency shell to another device and post it please.

You might be able to store dmesg in /dev/pstore.

My nvme boots on 5.4.1, but my efi is also on that nvme on the first partition.

The fallback initrd booted fine. Reinstalling kernel 5.4.1 caused the failure to reoccur.

So that's weird. The kernel sees the device, but it's not enumerated into the dev fs?

My nvme boots on 5.4.1, but my efi is also on that nvme on the first partition

Same setup here. EFI partition is nvme0n1p1 and root is nvme0n1p2.

What actual drive is this? I don't have any issues on an Intel 750

That's definitely the issue. I have the same drives as the first person reporting that bug: HP SSD EX900 120GB.

Looks like a kernel regression affecting any device using the Silicon Motion 2263 controller, or any other device which isn't fully NVMe 1.3 compliant. Also the patch and discussion make for fascinating reading: http://lists.infradead.org/pipermail/li … 28243.html

I ran into the same bug as you on a newly installed computer, and then I downgraded it to boot. But my VMware and NVIDIA don't work.
