Xorg fails to start with NVidia 440.36

Hello,

as of couple of days ago (update to NVidia 440.36), startx no longer works. I do not get thrown into desktop, but X seems to be running normaly since it responds to my hotkeys and closes normaly.

Kernel: 5.4.1
GPU driver: 440.36
GPU: NVidia: GeForce MX150 (GP108M)

Xorg config, only one file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf):

Section "Device"
        Identifier "Nvidia Card"
        Driver "nvidia"
        VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
        BoardName "GeForce MX150"
EndSection

Section "Screen"

    Monitor "Monitor0"
    Option "metamodes" "nvidia-auto-select +0+0 {ForceCompositionPipeline=On, ForceFullCompositionPipeline=On}"
    Option "AllowIndirectGLXProtocol" "off"
    Option "TripleBuffer" "on"
EndSection

If I comment out "Driver" line in this file, X starts and everything works, but I get severe screen tearing which I did not get prior to this update.

NVidia section of lspci -v:

Output of xrandr in my "~.xinitrc" script seem to indicate that no displays are found since there is no usual eDP-1-1 and HDMI-1-1:

Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 640 x 480, maximum 32767 x 32767

Thank you for any help.

Re: Xorg fails to start with NVidia 440.36

Your actual bug is the screen tearing with prime sync, which is a known regression in the 5.4 kernel (if you edit the config and add the driver line you actively break the offload that has to happen either way) I also doubt that forcefullcomposition and triplebuffer have any relevance on an Optimus system, so you could also likely omit that entire file.

You are correct, everything is the same if I remove the file. So, I should wait for kernel/NVidia patch to maybe fix that? Do I have other options?
I have tried open source driver briefly, but I did not manage to get it working nicely. Xorg takes long time to start and locks up the PC when I try to shut it down (lots of kernel messages in the TTY and TTY is then messed up, didn't investigate it further). I'm not sure if that is due to 2D features being WIP for my GPU (NV130) (https://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/FeatureMatrix/). I'm not sure what those features in the matrix mean. Do you think I should be able to get it working for desktop usage without those 2D features?

I've even tried wayland (sway) which works fine, but video playback performance is terrible, probably due to drivers.

Re: Xorg fails to start with NVidia 440.36

If you just want "working for desktop usage" you could disable/unload the nvidia card and let rendering be handled by the intel card directly. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NV … phics_only (a less extreme approach here would be to additionally set up e.g. bumblebee (but that has it's own slew of issues with the 440.36 driver right now) and/or set up optimus-manager to semi-dynamically switch between the active renderers.) If you follow either of these ensure you aren't applying the provideroutputsink xrandr call in your .xinitrc

Another option would be to downgrade the kernel to 5.3.13 and nvidia 440.36-2 for the time being.

I have tried disabling the nvidia card with bumblebee (bbswitch), but I'm not sure if I got intel HD graphics working correctly because the playback performance was horrible (video would stop every couple of seconds). I will do some more testing. Thank you!
