hi there been racking my brains for a straight week over this after 'upgrading' from normal t430 thinkpad to optimus (NVS 5400m) model
so i have researched VERY thoroughly and checked all relevant arch wiki pages start to finish MULTIPLE times
i have looked at so many articles regarding this subject my eyes are bleeding im beggining to think its hopeless ^^
any help will be greatly appreciated XD
i am running mainline kernel with optimus-manager nvidia-390xx-dkms + dependencies
system up to date 100%
optimus manager i have reinstalled many times and as i have seen the solution over 5 times by now being rebooting the system yes i tried that XD
intel session starts/boots normally (despite glx extension not supported error which only applies to steam so far
)
the only graphical config i have in /etc/X11 tree is
10-optimus-manager.conf
[cat /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc :
https://privatebin.net/?59ca8f3eb53216e … 5j2bMu84jC
xrandr output :
https://privatebin.net/?75522299865ca88 … Ezsm2bAEwg
[latest xorg log file : ~/.local/share/xorg>$ sudo nano Xorg.1.log : https://privatebin.net/?6578fac757cd1e5 … PK5FUk9HTi
output of sudo nano /etc/sddm.conf :
[Theme]
CursorTheme=breeze_cursors]
sudo nano /var/log/optimus-manager/ gpu_setup.log :
https://privatebin.net/?6fb1ccf46eb3f25 … 7KPXw31j1R
( i know it sais optimus manager.service not running but this is probably because i reinstalled i mustve enabled that service like litterally 500 times in my life now ^^
so sorry if that makes this log not relevant i will post new ones if needed
also modprobe nvidia and modprobe bbswitch run perfectly basically i have things in a way that are not identical to any of the hundreds of posts about this subject where using optimus-manager qt or cli switching to nvidia leaves me with only mouse cursor no blinking underscore / full access to tty, thank god
i had varying successes with bumblebee and optimus-manager but now i have landed in this state and im losing my mind !
i have had litterally thousands of issues in the past and ALWAYS managed to solve them by studying similar issues on forums and googeling i have installed arch based os's for 20+
friends and have converted many a winblows user
but this is my second time posting (first was admittedly a disaster dont jusdge me XD
so once again any help greatly appreciated my mind is burnt on this so im sure im forgetting some logs or info
i have tried every possible settings config for optimus manager and have nouveau blacklisted in blacklist.conf (which was progress at the time)
i am currently using intel driver and when i get stuck in the tty switching to nvidia lspci -k shows me that the nvidia driver IS indeed loaded
making me think this is stricly an X related issue
i have tried to disable sddm.service and startX manually from tty (as suggested in many many posts on this topic) and to no avail the only thing i can do each time is reboot and default back to intel driver
i have tried many changes i even tried the DREADED nvidia-xsetup i was so frustrated (dont shoot i reversed the changes XD )
so yeah again any help will be MASSIVELEY appreciated
thanks for your time
(and again so sorry if im not posting correctly i will correct whatever issue it may be )

None of your bins are accessible. To verify basic functionality remove optimus-manager and any custom xorg.confs you might have and follow https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NV … phics_only including doing the relevant files for SDDM/or .xinitrc adjustments. Once you've verified this works you can go back to fiddling with optimus-manager.

They would be if the OP didn't add stray closing brackets to all but one of the urls (that one works as is).

You should follow them first, as they will verify whether this can actually work in some shape, if these do work, you can remove them and switch to optimus-manager given you're configuring it correctly, you might also want to post your optimus-manager.conf if you've adjusted something there.

i do see the logic however was a disaster
so basically followed step by step the instructions removing old confs etc and then i assumed to run nvidia only i would have to rmmod intel and other drivers and blacklist them ??? i may be very wong cos again i was stuck in tty and had to undo all again just to return to graphical cos i dont have phone atm to post and im not tech enough to copy and paste logs and such into elinks . . : ( so now again i have i915 driver loaded . . . so it did seem however that it was similar problem once i was there , i only had nvidia driver loaded and all others blacklisted but still x refuse to start with or without sddm service ![]()

also tried setting bios to discrete only in that state all with the same result any idea where i could be going wrong as there is no real guide apart from arch wiki about running nvidia only with no manager and i suspect that its the same cause of both my problems before and after . . i did once have the optimus manager working but it would only switch to nouveau . . its possible it can be to do with 390xx driver series ?

optimus manager.conf has auto cleanup hook and each time i delete the .pacsave it leaves so i assume its fresh and default .conf for that for example now its this after fresh install : https://privatebin.net/?e8abe92c811e8d2 … qFtLZnKSRU

You mustn't blacklist the intel drivers, optimus works by relaying your rendered image over intel, they absolutely have to remain loaded. If you use SDDM just create the file read and executable by the SDDM user mentioned under the Display Manager section of the article I linked that file is all you have to configure nothing more, nothing less, install nvidia-390xx-dkms and nvidia-390xx-utils (you might also want to try the LTS or stable kernel if you are indeed on mainline) remove that xorg.conf you posted just now and uninstall xf86-video-intel.
If it still doesn't work, post the resulting xorg log, a

ok thank you so much, yeah i thought it was only the managers that fair enough then
sorry for the serial posting does make sense this rule
i had to go out but im back on it so im unblacklisting intel driver, and then reinstall nvidia390xx-dkms and uninstalling optimus manger again
i did give a go also with lts kernel i should of mentioned before
but seeing as it didnt solve the problem i reverted
seeing as the drivers all build succsesfully to the kernel i assumed that was ok on mainline also
i did have this issue with other stuff
so anyway ill let you know how it goes when i can try that again
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
so im back now and i at this point have only nouveau on any kind of blacklist
i will now modprobe again bbswitch and nvidia drivers
i unhashed out the xrandr lines in the sddm Xsetup file
bbswitch also has a .conf in /etc/modprobe.d that im not sure about so if get stuck in tty i will try remove that first maybe its has only one line
options bbswitch load_state=0 unload_state=1 bbswitch and nvidia modprobe with no issues
i will uninstall optimus-manager again and remove its configs
nvidia builds succsesfully with
warning: could not get file information for usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-nvidia-drm-outputclass.conf i think i mustve deleted this in a previous attempt
so anyway for now i will mkinitcpio and hopefully not dive into another half hour of tty session haha
ill let you know how it went from elinks if need be
_______________________________________________________________________________-
ok now im seriously confused cos i have
[lspci -k] [ 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF108M [NVS 5400M] (rev a1)
Subsystem: Lenovo GF108M [NVS 5400M]
Kernel driver in use: nvidia
Kernel modules: nouveau, nvidia_drm, nvidia] and i didnt even restart yet. . .
should i bother restarting or is this enough to test the theory that its actually working ??
steam still gives me
[openGL GLX estension not supported by display]
but at the same time it says
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09)
Subsystem: Lenovo 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller
Kernel driver in use: i915
Kernel modules: i915 simultaniously so is this how you said the driver in use only to copy the frames ?? cos when i had optimus manager still installed it said it was in intel mode
so anyway i will try to restart hope for the best ^^

trying to not serial post but realising maybe you wont see what i wrote until theres a new comment on this thread i will try to add stuff to it
i updated the previous one
also i learned code tags haha
-----
ok so i bit the bullet and dived in and hit another black screen . . gutted ^^
so i was reading the xorg log from start x and it said it was using a xorg.conf file so i tried to delete it like it claims in many posts this file is not used or needed
then hit a different black screen so ithought hmm progress had some further elinks exploration and it turns out booting with
nvidia-drm.modeset=1 as kernel parameter saved me and brought me back to graphical salvation ^^
so im logged in and lspci -k still report that BOTH i915 and nvidia drivers are loaded by their respective vga devices
even though i still cannot do pretty much anything graphical ( steam , vlc video , wine , ) even though youtube and such still works fine ..
so yeah i gonna see what i can work out over the next hour before i go to sleep about this same
GLX exxtension not supported by display
xorg log here : https://privatebin.net/?521c61432c5d2ce … 9ug1pBCRXe
error in the vague hopes of making it work , but does this mean im passing the test ?? i mean i guess its not technically 'working' per se haha
thoughts ??
thanks again so much ^^
okkk so in the end i was scrolling the xorg log a tad and see that its complaining about loading fb and vesa so i found
xf86-video-vesa xf86-video-fbdev and installed them also it said about GL but cant find package for that yet and this line also making me think nouveau is still terrorising me ^^ :
[ 5.198] (EE) AIGLX error: dlopen of /usr/lib/dri/swrast_dri.so failed (libdrm_nouveau.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory) (EE) AIGLX error: unable to load driver swrast swrast i assume is software rasterizer , boy im learning today , ok so installing those packages was probably a big fail because again it dropped me to black screen (and like tty1 looks powered off and swtching to tty2 brings the backlight back)
and this time my kernel param wasnt there to save me i was too tired so i just install nouveau driver and log back in until tomorow
(EE) modeset(G0): glamor initialization failed i think my laptop not feeling so glamorous today XD so thats me for the night ill check back in the morning
ok so im back on it for what its worth i did
sudo pacman -Rns xf86-video-vesa xf86-video-fbdev xf86-video-nouveau and i will try to see what happens next i still have my nvidia-drm.modeset=1 kernel param so hopefully i can still boot even though at this point im developing a phobia of rebooting XD
i also reinstated everything from the nvidia only section on arch wiki (xorg.conf file + xinitrc xrandr lines + sddm Xsetup file) + this as a test
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NV … n_Xorg.log
lets see if i can boot now

Still looks like you are trying to do too much, remove all xf86-video packages. post your xorg.conf file and your .xinitrc and
pacman -Qs nvidia
pacman -Qs mesaOffline
yeah it seems like to me too XD just had another long and hopeless tty session ^^

Remove the < > from the PCI parameter of your xorg conf, these are placeholders to be removed. The rest looks sane, no don't remove these packages, I'm specifically talking about xf86-video ones.
also given you've set that up you have to use startx once you are logged in. With the current config you should see a simple xorg with a clock and a terminal, running
glxinfo -Bin that terminal should show you nvidia as a renderer.

glxinfo -B
name of display: :0
Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual or fbconfig i should mention to escape tty once again i installed nouveau driver
its now uninstalled and reverted to blacklist pending my next attempt
and yeah also startX in tty as root or logged in as user failed multiple times i guess the latest xorg.conf wont be relevant as it had nouveau loaded
should i startx now from terminal ?? or do the dreaded reboot ??

startx as your user, never run startx as root.

good to know
startx
/usr/lib/Xorg.wrap: Only console users are allowed to run the X server
xinit: giving up
xinit: unable to connect to X server: Connection refused
xinit: server error
Couldn't get a file descriptor referring to the console i am currently logged in to graphical session if that makes a difference

What graphical session? Startx is how you start a graphical session from a tty.

yeah sorry wasnt clear
i was aware that startx start x session
so i should reboot and try current configs ??
and try to startx from tty and get xorg logs i imagine
will give it a go now

Yes (or just exit out of whatever session you're in), but I'm currious what "graphical session" you are in. This entire thread is about you not being able to start a graphical session, isn't it?

like i said before to escape tty i installed nouveau after trying all i could imagine from tty
because now im quite certain i will reboot and again be stuck in tty
right now im in my usual graphical session ie : sddm / kde / mainline kernel
could i just try from tty2 without closing my current session or would that not work ??
all help much appreciated very gratefull
and yeah its more about not being able to run the nvidia-390xx driver as whenever its loaded to nvidia device i get black screen
other drivers i can start session and login

If you use SDDM you must create the file mentioned in the SDDM section, just for testing I'd disable SDDM and just use startx from a TTY
