Seems to me that the biggest problem with IRC is that old posts aren't searchable (or newer ones if you're not signed on). At lesast that's what I saw in a brief encounter with Puppy's IRC.

It has it's place, but it's usefulness seems limited by that.

This is what I loved using muscle servers with BeShare: Log in, and type "catsup". It'll respond the latest 100 lines of what have been published. That was nice.

Btw, muscle is freeware:

Hmh, ah, WAS freeware. Seems it is no longer reachable.

Re: Forum People... Please, get on IRC

Well, I'm a student, and I literally learned almost everything I know about linux in an irc convo somewhere.

I think IRC is great, you guys should all come out and say hi.  I honestly think the best thing you can do is just chill and idle there.  Then if there is a conversation you want to jump in on, go ahead.  THe worst thing that happens?  You don't say anything.  The best thing that happens?  You get to know a whole lot of archers a lot better than you do on the forums, and have intarweb friends.

Pro idler here.

Well, every once in a while I'm reading a bit, and even more rarely I'm writing something too. smile

But I don't know why some say the channel would need more activity... there's enough.

Re: Forum People... Please, get on IRC

Hmm... The avatar does bear a bit of resemblence doesn't it?

(Moving right along now... tongue )

To get back to the OP, I have been using the IRC channel lately, and I think part of the problem is that its realtime nature contributes to the sort of people you see there - sometimes someone pops up who wants attention, RIGHT NOW, and doesn't try to be polite about it.

The other inherent problem with IRC is that it is single-threaded. When lots of people start to ask lots of questions, it can get rather messy.

IMHO, IRC can be useful for getting quick answers, or when you're limited to a CLI, but otherwise I tend to find the forums better.
