[SOLVED] lightDM screen black, xrandr outputs "Can't open display"

Started installing arch on my new Thinkpad T495 today, but I can't seem to get lightDM + i3 to work.
So far I installed lightdm, lightdm-gtk-greeter, i3, xorg-server, xorg-xinit, xorg-xrandr, xf86-video-fbdev, xf86-video-amd, xf86-video-ati and various other.

When I try to start lightDM with

systemctl start lightdm.service

the screen turns black, with only the blinking cursor at the top left corner.
Also, when trying to run

xrandr

it outputs

Can't open display
lspci -k | grep -e VGA

gives

... [AMD/ATI] Picasso (rev d3)

also /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ is empty.

Do you have any suggestion what I could try to get this working?

Re: [SOLVED] lightDM screen black, xrandr outputs "Can't open display"

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Li … TTY_output
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ke … _KMS_start

If you run xrandr on some console login, you'll have to inform it to which X11 server to talk to, eg "DISPLAY=:0 xrandr -q".
Please also post your xorg log.

Re: [SOLVED] lightDM screen black, xrandr outputs "Can't open display"

Both links unfortunately didn't help.
Also "DISPLAY=:0 xrandr -q" produces the same error.

I can however do "startx" which then shows two terminal emulators with white background, if that helps.

Re: [SOLVED] lightDM screen black, xrandr outputs "Can't open display"

Check the lightdm logs, your journal and coredumpctl.
That X11 server launched w/o errors but terminated immediately, suggesting that lightdm (or at least the greater) insta-crashed.

Re: [SOLVED] lightDM screen black, xrandr outputs "Can't open display"

Thank you very much for helping me, I finally found the issue. I had a small typo in /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf, that spelled "ligthdm-gtk-greeter" instead of "lightdm-gtk-greeter".

xrandr seemed to be a different problem, but I could also fix it by recreating the .Xauthority file.

Re: [SOLVED] lightDM screen black, xrandr outputs "Can't open display"

You probably previously tried to "sudo-fix" xrandr?

Please always remember to mark resolved threads by editing your initial posts subject - so others will know that there's no task left, but maybe a solution to find.
Thanks.
