I am trying to get s-nail to work with my ISP which is comcast but when I try to send a test message from the shell, I get
% mailx -s test myname@comcast.net < /dev/null
mail: Variable is read-only: #

mail: SMTP: Resource temporarily unavailable

mail: ... message not sentFollowing the wiki example, I made this as ~/.mailrc where the first bit comes from the package /etc/ version and the last part I took from the wiki. My actual password is hidden with xxxx below.

It looks like you're not reaching the server at all, or it's rejecting your connection. Are you sure smtp.comcast.net:465 is the right server & port combination you're supposed to use? Is that host accepting smtps request for TLSv1.2 only? Check your ISP documentation and make sure you are using the protocol they support.

465 is smtps, but also try smtp and port 587 (it's open and the interwebz™ says it's the preferred protocol for comcast)

Thanks go to you seth. It is working now using port 587.

I believe that s-nail 14.9.16 deprecated these options. See the man page of mailx for some examples, but this should work for you:
set tls-config-pairs'\
CipherString=TLSv1.2:!aNULL:!eNULL:@STRENGTH,\
Curves=P-521:P-384:P-256,\
Protocol=-ALL\,+TLSv1.1 \, +TLSv1.2\, +TLSv1.3'Offline
It seems smtp.comcast.net supports SMTPS at port 465. It does not seem to support TLSv1.3 yet, but the following should work (and smtp-use-starttls can be removed at :465, not at :587):
set tls-config-pairs=MinProtocol=TLSv1.2
set mta=smtps://myname%40comcast.net:xxxx@smtp.comcast.net:465
No 1.3 yet (xv is a function which locally sets verbose, as shown under COMMANDS in the manual):
