Nvidia prime offloading (almost) works ! Need help for the last mile

Hello everyone,

TLDR: To enhance battery life on my Optimus laptop I followed the wiki https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PR … er_offload for my Optimus laptop, and I can verify that the GPU consommation went down from ~25/30W to 5W, but 5W is still too much. Why ?

I installed the latest nvidia driver, used the package `nvidia-prime`, commented out the line

Option "PrimaryGPU" "yes"

from

/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-nvidia-drm-outputclass.conf

, followed the official Nvidia instructions and added a udev rule to disable nvidia stuff by default and setup power management feature. I think I'm good almost everywhere : using

nvidia-smi

the power consumption dropped from ~25/30W in average to ~5W, which is good but ! nvidia-smi also lists a process running on the dGPU: Xorg. Why ?

The laptop has the HDMI output directly connected to the dGPU and its Thunderbolt 3 output connected to the chipset, so I'm doing dual monitors using T3 since I setup Prime render offload when I used to use HDMI (not a big deal).

Here's the relevant info, don't hesitate to ask for more.

Re: Nvidia prime offloading (almost) works ! Need help for the last mile

Thanks for the link but I'm not sure I understand the relationship between prime sync and my problem (being Xorg running on Nvidia dgpu instead of Intel igpu). Or are you saying that the root cause cause is a problem between the latest Nvidia driver and the 5.4 kernel as the topic suggests ?

Re: Nvidia prime offloading (almost) works ! Need help for the last mile

Well the AllowGPUScreens option for prime pretty much mandates that the xorg process has to be aware of the GPU  in some way. The fact that it still uses something comes down to it being a Pascal and not a Turing GPU, only Turing GPUs go the "final" mile with Prime Offload. If this is insufficient you have to go for one of the more traditional approaches of enabling/allowing optimus like bumblebee or optimus-manager and the like which can actually unload the nvidia module.

Sorry. tbh, the reply was speculative reg. the subject (why read a wall of text if you can get away w/ a link for a related and common issue - plus I  got in a bit of a hurry…)

To add to V1del's comment and before you ask: no, you cannot bbswitch off the GPU w/ prime render offload and pre-turing cards don't support DPM, so there's no way to cut the battery drain down with this setup :-(

Re: Nvidia prime offloading (almost) works ! Need help for the last mile

Thanks for your answers guys. Too bad i can't achieve the last mile with my setup, the battery life gain doesn't even seem good based on `acpi -b`. I would need to do a real battery life test but no time for now. I think I'll just use optimus-manager and good for intel only at work (since I can dual monitor on thunderbolt 3 using only the iGPU) and nvidia at home when I play (no dual monitor here).

To nitpick on @V1del's answer, optimus-manager doesn't switch off the dGPU, one has to use the power management capabilities of the CPU/GPU as explained in the wiki https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NV … stallation. Right ?

By the way @seth what is this DPM thing that pre-turing cards don't support ?

Re: Nvidia prime offloading (almost) works ! Need help for the last mile

dynamic power management, http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linu … ement.html
This is also why you cannot use that feature w/ optimus-manager, you'll have to resort to one of the other options (eg. bbswitch) as explained in the sublink in the wiki note.

Re: Nvidia prime offloading (almost) works ! Need help for the last mile

@DjebbZ optimus-manager has three modes to choose between:

* intel --> only intel is active (nvidia is off so no battery drain from there, at least this is my understanding)
* hybrid --> both intel and nvidia are on (intel is used as primary and nvidia for render offloading if needed, you will have battery drain from the nvidia though except if you are on turing and afterwards chip where you can turn it off if not used)
* nvidia --> both are active again but nvidia is now used as the primary output

thus if you use the intel option you can have some battery saving mode.

Re: Nvidia prime offloading (almost) works ! Need help for the last mile

As for the documentation, the chip isn't automatically powered off by optimus-manager, even w/ the intel mode. You'll have to explicitly configure a method.
But you *can* save battery w/ the intel mode (or any approach to unload the nvidia module)

Re: Nvidia prime offloading (almost) works ! Need help for the last mile

I did read the guide for DPM for Nvidia when I set things up... How did I miss that part ?

This feature requires a Turing or newer GPU.

So I think it will be optimus-manager, bbswitch didn't work when I tried and doesn't support DXVK which I use anyway. Sigh... I think I understand the hatred towards nvidia regarding linux compatibility...

Thanks again guys, you rock!

Do I have to mark the topic as solved somehow ? I'm new to the forums, don't know all the rules.

Re: Nvidia prime offloading (almost) works ! Need help for the last mile

@seth based on this if you use the bbswitch instead of the nouveau the nvidia card is turned off automatically on the intel mode, but I might be understanding it wrongly though.

If you are satisfied that your issue has been solved, edit your first post and add [SOLVED] to the title.

Re: Nvidia prime offloading (almost) works ! Need help for the last mile

@Theodore, https://github.com/Askannz/optimus-mana … nt-options

optimus-manager supports several ways to control the power state of the Nvidia GPU, however since v1.2 they are all disabled by default.

The AUR package doesn't seem to write a specific config so my impression is that you'll have to do that locally.

@DjebbZ
bbswitch is a way to power off the GPU, I assume your previous efforts regarded bumblebee/optirun?
Of course if you switch the GPU off, you won't be able to use it, but the purpose of bumblebee is, not unlike prime, to activate and use it conditionally.

Re: Nvidia prime offloading (almost) works ! Need help for the last mile

I'm pretty sure I've just deleted a /etc/modprobe.d/bbswitch file because it just didn't work at all, doing nothing. I may retry though since I have a better understanding of the overall Optimus problem. If I understand correctly, I'll be able to deactivate the dgpu with Optimus manager AND switch it off completely with bbswitch ?

Re: Nvidia prime offloading (almost) works ! Need help for the last mile

Yes. bbswitch is what turns of your GPU once the nvidia module is unloaded in "intel-only" mode. But you have to configure the relevant optimus-manager setting for that.
