[SOLVED] Laptop sometimes freezes after waking up from hibernation

My laptop is Dell Precision 5530 2-in-1. I've noticed most issues related to XPS are also relevant for it.

When I wake up from hibernate, the laptop sometimes freezes on the unlock screen and I have to reboot it (and last reboot, it fell to command line saying I needed to run fsck manually)

Here is the journal where I think it's freezing

I'm open to the possibility my m.2 hard disk is failing (although this is a new laptop). But I'd definitely want to exclude software before I go ahead and purchase a new m.2 hard disk to get the same result. I would think if this problem was HD related, it wouldn't only happen when I wake up from hibernation. Another guess (totally newbie guess) is that applications are resuming before HD is mounted (possibly some power saving feature of dells?).

Re: [SOLVED] Laptop sometimes freezes after waking up from hibernation

Retry these journal excerpts with sudo, the posted ones only show the user session, not what happens on a kernel level. FWIW there have been some reports for issues with recovering from stand-by on the recent kernels, you might want to look into e.g. https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=250863 and add init_on_alloc=0 to your kernel params and/or trying the LTS kernel and check whether that helps.

Re: [SOLVED] Laptop sometimes freezes after waking up from hibernation

I tried init_on_alloc=0, that didn't work. I installed linux-lts and it seems to be working. Sometimes the problem is intermittent, so I'll watch out a bit more for it.

Thanks a lot!

All good with LTS. I do hope the LTS will get updated often enough though.

Yes the LTS kernel is actively updated  with bugfix/security fix patches at around the same pace normal stable patches are. One thing here though is that 5.4 is slated to be the next LTS, so you will want to hope this to be ironed out before the move to 5.5 happens
