dnsmasq not caching requests properly

So the whole reason I am setting up dnsmasq is because of the issue with web browsing being slow and the fact steam cannot download over 300k/bits a second. I am going to post my config files and was wondering if any of you could spot an issue. Thanks in advance! The goal dnsmasq is suppose to cache request intern not bombarding my isp.

/etc/dnsmasq.conf

listen-address=::1,127.0.0.1

cache-size=5000

conf-file=/usr/share/dnsmasq/trust-anchors.conf
dnssec

conf-file=/etc/dnsmasq-openresolv.conf
resolv-file=/etc/dnsmasq-resolv.conf

no-resolv

server=1.1.1.1
server=8.8.8.8

/etc/resolvconf.conf

resolv_conf=/etc/resolv.conf
name_servers="::1 127.0.0.1"

dnsmasq_conf=/etc/dnsmasq-openresolv.conf
dnsmasq_resolv=/etc/dnsmasq-resolv.conf

/etc/resolv.conf

# Generated by resolvconf
nameserver ::1
nameserver 127.0.0.1

Re: dnsmasq not caching requests properly

Welcome to the forums.  First a couple points on making your post more effective:

1) Fix your title (edit your post to revise the title): "Hello, I need help in regard to my" is the majority of the characters in your title, yet it says absolutely nothing.  Get rid of all that and use the salvaged space to say something about what you need help with about your dnsmasq setup, or what problem you are facing.

With that, are you even facing a problem?  You've just posted a config and want us to review it?  Is it working?  If so, why do you need feedback?  If not, in what way is it not working to your satisfaction?

2) While you are editing your post, add [ code ] tags around the config file.

---

On the topic at hand, why do you think dnsmasq would improve steams download speed?  It *might* help initial DNS lookup, but it should not change transmission rates.  So was there some pre-existing problem that you thought dnsmasq might solve?  Tell us about that problem ... and why you think dnsmasq would be useful.  Do you want better solutions?

I don't have much experience with dnsmasq, but I'm not sure what your setup even is intended to do.  If I'm reading it right, your resolv.conf points DNS queries to dnsmasq running on the localhost, which in turns points them all to 1.1.1.1 or google's 8.8.8.8 external DNS providers.  If this is it, what's the point?  Cut out the middle man and just use 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8 in your resolve{conf}.conf.  But FWIW, my ISPs DNS is a lot faster than either 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8 (the latter two may be preferable for security reasons, but not speed), so test speeds yourself before making changes.

Thanks for the advice on my post (I am new to forums in general)! So the issue I am having is with a bug that happens on some systems I do not fully understand. In my own understanding it boils down a network manager issue that causes to many dns requests to flood out and majorly slow down my isp. This config was setup so I could cache requests and it should intern speed up the download.

This is where I got the idea from

Re: dnsmasq not caching requests properly

Ah, sorry.  Yes dnsmasq is more than a middle man in this case: it is doing the caching locally.

So are you not seeing any benefit from using dnsmasq?  Your new title is more descriptive, but how do you know dnsmasq isn't caching properly?  Please describe the symptoms, not your suspicions/inferences.

(also note your code tags are only around the file names now which don't really need them, you should have them around the file content).

Re: dnsmasq not caching requests properly

I am seeing benefits for a short period of time then it is almost as if it expires and the speeds tank. Another reason is that has me suspecting it isnt working correctly is dnsmasq's startup is throwing some errors

Re: dnsmasq not caching requests properly

Dec 26 19:05:11 vent420 dnsmasq[759]: no servers found in /etc/dnsmasq-resolv.conf, will retry

The above suggests you might have forgotten to run sudo resolvconf -u to generate /etc/dnsmasq-resolv.conf (or that something else is off with those files). Can you show the contents of both /etc/dnsmasq-resolv.conf and /etc/dnsmasq-openresolv.conf please?

To compare you could install unbound, which also does caching locally and IMHO is better supported on Arch.
