[SOLVED] Garbled display with AMD Vega 10 (Ryzen 3700u) on Lenovo E595

Hi,

I'm trying to setup a Lenovo E595 laptop, equipped with an AMD Vega 10 GPU, and I'm having issues with the display. Here is what gnome and xfce respectively look like:

I did install the amdgpu driver following https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AMDGPU and looking at dmesg | grep amdgpu, it seems that it is loaded correctly (also confirmed by running lshw -c video):

The problem also happens with a live Ubuntu/Manjaro Gnome, but not on a live Windows... I tried kernel flags, disabling the compositor in xfce (found e.g. https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=248840), the LTS and Zen kernels, bios came from the factory in the latest 1.11 version... I'm starting to feel a bit desperate and don't see what else I could do.

Any suggestions would be very welcome smile

Re: [SOLVED] Garbled display with AMD Vega 10 (Ryzen 3700u) on Lenovo E595

Good news: got everything running by installing `-git` version of `mesa` and `xf86-video-amdgpu`, and adding the flags `amd_iommu=pt ivrs_ioapic[32]=00:14.0 immo=soft`. Not sure if all were necessary, though.
I hope that will save a few hours to the next person wink

Helped me a ton thanks brother!!!

Re: [SOLVED] Garbled display with AMD Vega 10 (Ryzen 3700u) on Lenovo E595

I hate to say this, but I don't think this is the right solution. Requiring "-git" version is not something that is acceptable for typical users.

[   471.005] (==) Matched amdgpu as autoconfigured driver 0
[   471.005] (==) Matched ati as autoconfigured driver 1
[   471.005] (==) Matched modesetting as autoconfigured driver 2

For modern Linux with modern hardware and upstream kernel, one should simply remove all the xf86-video-* so that the modesetting driver will be preferred instead of legacy xorg DDX drivers (intel, ati, amd etc.) Please do a "pacman -Qs xf86-video" and clean out all of them. You can leave vesa and fbdev if desired.

Thank you for your input. Actually, I think that using the -git packages was unnecessary, and that the kernel flags were the key to making it work. I just tried to replace mesa-git by mesa, and it's still working (haven't tried with amdgpu yet).

I installed xf86-video-amdgpu because it is mentioned on https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AMDGPU Do you mean it is not necessary?

I doubt typical users run archlinux, but there's an easy solution for those not wanting -git versions :
wait until the solutions have entered stable versions, for mesa that usually means waiting 3 months.

While modesetting driver does a good job and is first choice for the intel gpu, the ati and amd ddx drivers offer functionality not present in the modesetting driver.
first choice fro recent amd cards is xf86-video-amdgpu, 2nd xf86-video-ati or modesetting depending on the card.

Re: [SOLVED] Garbled display with AMD Vega 10 (Ryzen 3700u) on Lenovo E595

I run modesetting driver on Ryzen 2500u with GNOME/Wayland. I don't play contemporary games with Wine/Photon or anything, mostly typical office stuffs, web browsing and videos. I use Chromium-vaapi as my primary browser. Everything's just great and the system is rock stable. I believe KMS/DRM is the next-gen Linux graphics stack and xorg DDX should be deprecated.

The Ryzen APU was what made me switched from Ubuntu to Arch as it was best with recent upstream kernels and Arch was a perfect fit. I can hardly believe Ryzen 3000 series APU could be that different for Linux support for the same Vega generation of GPU.

Compare man amdgpu with man modesetting .
The amdgpu ddx driver lists TearFree and VariableRefresh , modesetting doesn't.

The Ryzen 2500U uses Radeon™ Vega 8 Graphics, ryzen 3700U has  Radeon™ RX Vega 10 Graphics .
The gpus are of not the same generation.
