handbrake: "No title found" on some DVDs

Well, the title is sums it all up quite nicely:
Handbrake works like a charm for most of my DVDs but it doesn't work at all for some of them:

[sigi@arch ~]$ handbrake-beta -i /dev/dvd -o some_dvd.mp4 -m x264b30 -a 1
HandBrake 0.8.5b1 (2007042001) - http://handbrake.m0k.org/
1 CPU detected
Opening /dev/dvd...
No title found.
HandBrake has exited.

Anyone with similiar experiences or a useful hint for me? hmm

Cheers Sigi

just a shot, what does lsdvd show?  Some of the DVDs floating around have hacked menus and much fiddling done with the IFO files.

Does

 handbrake -i /dev/dvd -t 0

show any titles on the dvd?

Occasionally, handbrake won't recognize some of the titles on a dvd for me. Sometimes cleaning the dvd and makeing sure there are no smudges on it will fix that though.

handbrake -i /dev/dvd -t 0 revealed that title 1 and 3 were empty and that the movie was on title 4. Its works great now!
Thank you barebones and waltm for your help!

Re: handbrake: "No title found" on some DVDs

I realize this is an old thread, but it helped me resolve a similar issue I was having attempting to rip some DVD discs.

A solution wasn't explicitly stated in the thread, but I was able to discover that the main title on the particular DVD I was ripping was not on title 1 using the method Sigi mentioned, running:

handbrake -i /dev/dvd -t 0

I was able to get it to work by running:

handbrake --main-feature -i /dev/sr0 -o foo.mkv

I'd speculate that failing that, one could also try specifying the title(s) directly by their index with the -t switch, but I didn't explore this any.
