[SOLVED] Mount ntfs fakeRAID

Hey all,

I am using Arch Linux for almost three years on my notebook and am currently trying to set it also up on my desktop in a dual boot with windows. Here is my setup:

- Windows and Linux System on NVMe-SSD
- 2x 4TB HDD in RAID1 (NTFS)
- onboard AMD RAID controller

I first installed Windows a couple of weeks ago and already used my HDDs to store documents, pictures, .... (yes, I do have a backup big_smile )
The RAID was built within BIOS but there is no hardware RAID-controller. So I assume it's a FakeRAID configuration.

Today I tried to find a way to access the data stored in the RAID but failed to mount it.

Any suggestion how to access the RAID in Arch? Isn't it possible?

- dmraid doesnt seem to recognize raid

$ sudo dmraid -tay
no raid disks

- ls /dev/mapper doesnt show raid

$ ls /dev/mapper
control

- lsblk is only showing empty space, doesnt seem to recognize ntfs partition. Windows is telling me that free space is 1.7T.

$ lsblk -a

Re: [SOLVED] Mount ntfs fakeRAID

Since you said AMD RAID, maybe look at rcraid. If you have NVME drives in a raid, it may not be possible.

Re: [SOLVED] Mount ntfs fakeRAID

Thank you for posting the link.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to install it due to an error:

arch/x86/entry/syscalls/Makefile: No such file or directory

Where to get the file from? Did I miss to install something?
The whole dir /usr/lib/modules/5.4.6-arch3-1/build/arch/x86/entry is missing:

$ ls /usr/lib/modules/5.4.6-zen3-1-zen/build/arch/x86/
events include Kconfig Kconfig.cpu Kconfig.debug kernel kvm Makefile ras um xen

Here is what I did up to now:

- First I tried to just use to install script. This is the output:

$ git clone [url]https://github.com/thopiekar/rcraid-dkms.git[/url]
$ cd rcraid-dkms
$ chmod +x install
$ ./install

- I found rcraid in AUR ( https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/rcraid-dkms/) but installation also failed:

Re: [SOLVED] Mount ntfs fakeRAID

Thanks, I was able to compile it. Replacing mkinitramfs line by 'mkinitcpio -p linux-zen' in install script made me able to create a new linux image which automatically loads rcraid as module.

$ dmesg | grep 'rcraid'
[ 0.970210] rcraid: loading out-of-tree module taints kernel.
[ 0.970216] rcraid: module license 'Proprietary' taints kernel.

[ 0.971813] <5>rcraid built on testarch by root on Tue 31 Dec 2019 06:04:11 PM CET
[    0.971814] <5>rcraid: cmd_q_depth 512, tag_q_depth 16, max_xfer 448, use_swl 0xffffffff
 $ lsmod | grep 'rcraid'
rcraid               2560000  0
scsi_mod              262144  3 rcraid,sd_mod,libata

But unfortunately the system still doesn't recognize the raid and dmesg output looks different to what I've found here:

UEFI Settings look good, so I don't know what to do now. Did I miss something?

Re: [SOLVED] Mount ntfs fakeRAID

I'm a newbie myself but have setup 2 RAIDS on my desktop.
Forgive me if this is a dumb suggestion but have you looked at the disk in GParted at all to see how it's partitioned?
It looks to me like there is only one partition on the RAID of 1.7T . Is that not the ntfs partition?

Re: [SOLVED] Mount ntfs fakeRAID

Thanks for your suggestion. I checked how the HDDs are partitioned using GParted. It says that 2 TB are unallocated and the 1.7TB are of an unknown file system.

As I already mentioned in my initial posting, Windows is telling me that the free space of the RAID is 1.7T. So I assume that the unallocated part of the disks contains the ntfs partition.

But even if I am wrong. How to mount /dev/sda and /dev/sdb as RAID 1? I cannot mount /dev/sda1:

# mount /dev/sda1 RAID
mount: /mnt/RAID: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda1, missing codepage or helper program, or other error.

Re: [SOLVED] Mount ntfs fakeRAID

Is there any data on the RAID?
If not maybe use GParted and recreate all the partitions you want.
Then your mount should look something like mine...

mount /dev/sdd2 /mnt/e-raid

and my lsblk is

Yes, since I set Windows up first some weeks ago I already stored 2TB of data (referring to Win10). That's the reason why I am pretty sure that the 1.7TB is just the space left on the disks.

EDIT: Issue solved

I was able to adjust the dkms AUR package. You just have to update the patch file as progandy suggested:

What I was missing before to access the RAID:
Append

modprobe.blacklist=ahci

to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT in /etc/default/grub.
I thought this is only necessary in case of booting from the RAID but it seems as if it is also mandatory to be able to mount the RAID.

Re: [SOLVED] Mount ntfs fakeRAID

I installed Thopiekar package on Manjaro and it didn't work, I think it's because AHCI is a builtin kernel module so blacklisting it doesn't work. correct me if I'm wrong I want to make it work.
