[SOLVED] xorg and desktop environment installation from root?

I have read the Installation wiki but im pretty unsure of how to proceed.

Say im...  chrooted into the newly pacstraped system, configured stuff and set up the user account. Do i now change into the user account and install xorg, video drivers, kdeplasma with sudo pacman, or do i remain as root user and install the DE?

Is there a difference and how do i proceed in installing the correct way?

Sorry for the noob question, im still trying to put averything together.

No there is not a difference, just don't try to run x as root.

But really you'd be best off rebooting (and removing the live usb) so you boot into your new system before progressing further.

You can only use pacman to install packages if you are logged in as root or use sudo. However, launching X as the root user is a very bad idea.

Re: [SOLVED] xorg and desktop environment installation from root?

I would suggest that you set up your bootloader (you did not mention that you had set that up yet).
Then, reboot and make certain you can get things going from a clean boot.
And make sure your network is working.

Now you have a working system.

Next install sudo, put your user in the wheel group, and configure sudo to allow wheel members to do privileged things with their password.

Lastly, install xorg, and anything else you need as your user using sudo to gain root permissions.

Edit:  You received good comments from three people who have been around a long time -- apparently I am the slowest sad

Bootctl is used as bootmanager and was already configured.

There seems to be a bug in the sddm login manager which lauches xorg as root. Does this mean using sddm as login manager to start the KDE desktop makes the system vulnerable?

Re: [SOLVED] xorg and desktop environment installation from root?

That's a bit of a different point.

Comments in this thread were ensuring that you never tried to run startx/xinit as root.  Your DM/WM definitely should not run as root - and they don't with SDDM.

Now whether SDDM should run the X server as root is a very different question.  It is perfectly "normal" for it to do so on a properly running arch system.  So don't panic.  It may not be wise or entirely secure ... so panic a little, or consider safer alternatives.  But SDDM running Xorg as root is not indicative of you doing anything incorrectly.

Thanks

Consider whether logging into a console (enter user name and password) followed by startx is any less convenient than a display manager.

(Empirically) Most of us old farts do it that way.

Sure I do.  It's about 100 lines of C code, but it manages my windows.
