[SOLVED] Nvidia doesn't load after nvidia-utils 440.44-2 update
I had a similar problem after updating a few days ago. I have an Arch virtual machine with PCI passthrough of an Nvidia card and after the update there were the same "no devices found" and "no screens found" errors in my X11 log file.
After downgrading nvidia-utils from 440.44-2 to 440.36-1 and nvidia-dkms from 440.44-9 to 440.36-5 everything works again. Before that I also tried if the current nvidia packages work with any other kernel (specifically, I tried linux, linux-lts, and linux-zen), but that didn't make any difference.
Edit:
My /etc/modprobe.d is empty and it seems the nvidia driver module loads with both package versions.

You don't have the same issue, shown by the fact that your nvidia driver loads properly and stays properly loaded. This does sound either like a change stemming from a config change in the package, but that shouldn't have affected single nvidia gpu systems under normal circumstances, something might've changed in the naming with regards to your static xorg.conf. I suggest you remove /etc/X11/xorg.conf and try to reproduce.

+-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+What ends up happening is that the X server auto-configures to using the virtual QXL device and Spice server for the X screen. I have those as part of the virtual machine to access GRUB and the ttys.
I also tried running nvidia-xconfig but the xorg.conf it generated ended up causing the same behavior as the one I have been using previously, i.e. no X screens are found.
Everything in this post so far is using the most up to date packages for right now. I've also confirmed that downgrading nvidia and nvidia-utils is still all that's required to "fix" the problem. So the old nvidia packages continue to work with the newest kernel etc.
