[SOLVED] NVIDIA GTX 1060 + nvidia driver + Alienware AW17R4

Hello all,

I have spent a couple of weekends trying to figure out why I can't get my nvidia graphics card to work with the nvidia driver on my laptop. I have gotten it to work with nouveau but have noticed "bad" graphics during some of my games. So I thought I'd try the nvidia driver instead. My attempts have failed everytime. If you have any tips please let me know. Is nouveau supposed to have crappy graphics or is my gfx card crappy? I will provide some logs and config files. Please let me know if you want more. Thank you for your time.

install i915 /usr/bin/false
install intel_agp /usr/bin/false

Re: [SOLVED] NVIDIA GTX 1060 + nvidia driver + Alienware AW17R4

install i915 /usr/bin/false
install intel_agp /usr/bin/false

if you want to run on only the nvidia gpu you need to first go into bios and set it to only use the discrete graphics, thats if you even have that option and not all optimus laptops do (most dont).  if you dont have the option to disable the intel gpu in bios you can set it up a number of different ways, some of which are mentioned in the wiki.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA_Optimus

and about nouveau, it works but for any kind of performance you'll need the nvidia drivers.

Re: [SOLVED] NVIDIA GTX 1060 + nvidia driver + Alienware AW17R4

To expand on the above, it is absolutely crucial that you don't blacklist your intel modules, they are still required if you don't have an option in your UEFI (which something this modern is unlikely to have

Re: [SOLVED] NVIDIA GTX 1060 + nvidia driver + Alienware AW17R4

dglt, thank you. I spent last night with that wiki you referenced and my laptop. I got it working with bumblebee.

V1del, thanks, yes, I removed that blacklist file and started over.

Note to future self or anyone interested with the same hardware. I had to install "nvidia-lts" driver, as the "nvidia" driver didn't work.
