[SOLVED] Xorg freezes with the most up-to-date packages (Ryzen/Amdgpu)

Hi,

I updated the entire system last night (West Europe time) and I'm experiencing constant freezings when opening a (I guess) 3D accelerated application. Only tested with Firefox (72.0.1-1) and Chromium (79.0.3945.117-1). Like 10 or 15 seconds after the PC is frozen, during 5 seconds some parts of the screen blink and then the screen becomes totally static. I can't do a Ctrl-Alt-F2 or whatever. I'm totally stuck.

However, I can still access this frozen PC through SSH. If I do

sudo killall -9 Xorg

in the ssh session, the system "recovers".

I guess downgrading some packages will solve the issue until somebody finds out what's going on, but I don't know which of them (as I did a massive update of packages. Last time I did pacman -Syu was  4 months ago). Any help on this?

This is the Xorg.0.log I can get from the ssh session:

Re: [SOLVED] Xorg freezes with the most up-to-date packages (Ryzen/Amdgpu)

Well, I wouldn't say that this post is solved, but downgrading the kernel worked for me as the computer no longer freezes:

linux to 5.2.14.arch2-1
linux-headers to 5.2.14.arch2-1
gcc-libs to 9.1.0-2
gcc to 9.1.0-2
lib32-gcc-libs to 9.1.0-2

If I downgrade the version to 5.4.2 it keeps freezing but it recovers after exactly 10 seconds. I put it to 5.2.14 as it was my previous kernel installed.
gcc related stuff is also required to be downgraded because dkms modules don't compile otherwise.

Re: [SOLVED] Xorg freezes with the most up-to-date packages (Ryzen/Amdgpu)

Try booting 5.4.x with

amdgpu.noretry=0

see https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page= … ults-Raven for more info and useful links

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky
