I'm a little confused here. I realize Arch doesn't use sendmail and that postfix should be used as a replacement but I can't get it to work with the mail command. I want to send a user mail by
mail -s "subject bla" username
message
here
control + D
Which is (as far as I know) sent via sendmail, or postfix if you have postfix installed.
I get no error messages after control D but the command mail for that user doesn't recognize any new mail.
Am I going about this right or am I issuing the wrong command to retirieve mail?

Are you trying to send to a local user on the same box? You might need something like procmail to deliver the mail from the MTA to /var/spool/mail/username.
Check /var/log/maillog (or whatever it is) to see what is happening.

Yeah I'm trying to send it to the same user on the same box and there are no errors in the logfile.
I recall doing this on a white box machine very easily with no problems and no configuring -although I'm pretty sure it had sendmail. Thats why I thought postfix would work since its a drop in replacement.
I'll look into procmail.

RedHat comes with procmail so it works upfront. Once you get something in /var/spool/mail/ you should be good to go as long as permissions are set up properly on the spool files.

mailx/mail uses sendmail I beleive, and postfix has a helper app named sendmail, and uses postfix. postfix has a separate subprocess that handles local delivery..
Just make sure your spool directory in postfix, is the same as your MAILDIR command in your shell...
This link has some good info..

ok found the problem. I left out my domain name in myhostname variable in /etc/postfix/main.cf. Strange though because it sent mail to my gmail account no problem without it.
Thanks guys
