I've always wanted to create a live ISO that contained every init in existence, and you could choose between the 20 of them at bootup.

How about starting with few AUR inits by making them workable.... sysVinit, openrc and runit. From there creating respins (installable iso) to test.
This tread has quite many view hits, users seem interested in this.

No-one wants yet more stupid respins.

Maybe in Arch if it doesn't have the respin tools. Otherwise its an outdated opinion. This page has 32,000 hits in 8 months and many of the respins have hundreds of download.

You should know better: no-one cares about popularity here. We care even less about spinoffs: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Co … pport_ONLY

In this thread discussing about other inits and finding things to coexist, "respin" is not a "spinoff". Its a tool to test new ideas without messing up our running system. A writable USB live respin is ideal in this regard. The respin link I posted, are users individual experiments showing either new possibilities for the distro or solving questions or issues. Example when there was the question that systemd-shim will not be available in Debian 10, which was earlier mentioned in this thread.

Just checking if there are any new developments. Earlier I took a look at the availability of inits in AUR, not maintained. But this thread seems taken interest by many users (5000 hits), maybe something will come.

I just read new posts for a general interest in what's talked about (and due to my board function) , I don't care to ever use openrc, so using thread hits as a gauge of interest towards the software in question is unlikely to tell much.

Same, also I can't help but think that "maybe something will come" if instead of watching forum thread view counts waiting for something to happen that actually stepping up & maintaining those inits in the aur and doing some work would speed things up a little but what do I know

I understand the ironic ...not this time. Spent too many years just setting up Arch and then experimenting with AUR. Though I did few tests by first installing Arch with "Zen Installer" to speed up the install. Wanted to check Alad's live ISO idea... "that contained every init in existence". If its possible or not. At least few inits in one iso. But the AURs need more work than I thought. That is not interesting.... you want to build a "house" but the "hammer and saw" don't work.

I would say it's possible. Some years ago I was doing something similar with a guy who used sinit (I was using busybox). The fact that pacman isn't coupled to systemd - beyond use of systemd tools in certain pacman packages, like sysusers, udev, and so on - made it a reasonable exercise. See here https://git.fleshless.org/u/spark. Some things have changed since then, e.g. more frequent use of sysusers.
To go back to the question on logind, this remark https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 2#p1882982 might give some more ideas.

I know i am no one here but i would love it if arch, in the spirit of gnu/linux made it readily possible to use a few other inits. I copied my arch root directory a couple of times so i could play around with it a bit. I converted one arch root directory to artix and was hoping to use another copy and convert it to openrc, even if i have to leave systemd in tact because of the attached build dependencies for many programs. Though i for sure do not understand why those flags are present in the builds if they are not implicitly necessary for the programs to run. (ie they can run just fine on any other init so long as the flags arent present). Seems unnecessary and has created a situation where people have to choose between arch and making a spinoff to use any other init. Really i think arch should allow people the choice but it seems they are about limiting choice when it comes to inits at least. Not sure i understand all that 'my init or the highway' kinda thinking. Gnu/Linux is about choice yes?
BTW, I also use arch, gentoo, artix & manjaro

NO.

What are your criteria for making it "readily possible"? It's currently possible - so define "readily".
"UNIX is simple and coherent" - Dennis Ritchie; "GNU's Not Unix" - Richard Stallman
