[SOLVED] Wanting to get rid of grub and use systemd-boot

I would like to get rid of grub, in order to have a much faster boot time and not have to deal with it.  i am trying to get systemd-boot to work and here are my config files:

arch.conf located in /boot/efi/loader/entries

title Arch Linux
linux /vmlinuz-linux
initrd /initramfs-linux.img
options root=PARTUUID=33ab2eea-6998-c643-a6e3-020799fdf262 rw

The loader.conf file located in /boot/efi/loader/entries

default arch
timeout 4

My /etc/fstab

# Static information about the filesystems.
# See fstab(5) for details.

# <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
UUID=041C-0213          /boot/efi       vfat            defaults        0 2
# /dev/nvme0n1p2

# /dev/sda1
UUID=c9766357-0ecb-4a41-8c60-863cd9223bf6       /home           ext4            rw,relatime     0 2

UUID=2c98b545-ea9b-43ed-8c82-ed7fbdd3de0c / ext4 rw,relatime,x-gvfs-name=Arch 0 1

my bootctl list

[root@pegasus ~]# bootctl list
Boot Loader Entries:
        title: Arch Linux (default)
           id: arch
       source: /boot/efi/loader/entries/arch.conf
       linux: /vmlinuz-linux (No such file or directory)
       initrd: /initramfs-linux.img (No such file or directory)
       options: root=PARTUUID=33ab2eea-6998-c643-a6e3-020799fdf262 rw

my blkid read out

[root@pegasus loader]# blkid

This is the bootctl --path /boot/efi install output

[root@pegasus loader]# bootctl --path /boot/efi install

Yes... What is your question? wink

Did you need help with something? Are you experiencing an error message? What is the error?

No, it didn't "fix" anything. It just shifted the brokeness one space to the right. - jasonwryan

Re: [SOLVED] Wanting to get rid of grub and use systemd-boot

Yes I am having an issue.  The loader Arch is not showing up in my EFI boot it shows up as Linux Boot Manager and only allows me to reboot to system firmware

Re: [SOLVED] Wanting to get rid of grub and use systemd-boot

systemd-boot can only load the kernel and initramfs from the ESP. Yours are currently on the root partition.

Re: [SOLVED] Wanting to get rid of grub and use systemd-boot

So in that file I would specifically include the path to /boot/vmlinuz-linux and the initramfs file?  I have tried that and it and when I run bootclt list this is the output:

[root@pegasus entries]# bootctl list
Boot Loader Entries:
        title: Arch Linux (default)
           id: arch
       source: /boot/efi/loader/entries/arch.conf
        linux: /boot/efi/vmlinuz-linux (No such file or directory)
       initrd: /boot/initramfs-linux.img (No such file or directory)

Re: [SOLVED] Wanting to get rid of grub and use systemd-boot

No, the path in the config isn't the main issue, the fact is that the kernel and initramfs are inaccessable to systemd-boot. They MUST be on the ESP.

Re: [SOLVED] Wanting to get rid of grub and use systemd-boot

They are on the ESP.  My ESP is on the following partition:

├─nvme0n1p1 259:1    0   256M  0 part /boot/efi

Read out from parted -l

Model: Samsung SSD 960 EVO 250GB (nvme)
Disk /dev/nvme0n1: 250GB
Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B
Partition Table: gpt
Disk Flags:

Number  Start   End    Size    File system     Name                  Flags
1      1049kB  269MB  268MB   fat32           EFI system partition  boot, esp
2      269MB   230GB  230GB   ext4            Arch
3      230GB   250GB  19.8GB  linux-swap(v1)                        swap

Re: [SOLVED] Wanting to get rid of grub and use systemd-boot

No, they aren't. Your ESP is mounted to /boot/efi/. The kernel and initramfs are at /boot/, which is just a dir on your root partition.

They are located on /boot which is a separate partition to /boot/efi.

Re: [SOLVED] Wanting to get rid of grub and use systemd-boot

So the only way I can use systemd-boot is to reinstall Arch and create a new esp called /efi and then it will work?

What the...? How the hell did you come to that conclusion?

Either change the location of your ESP or use something to copy the files. Reinstalling makes no sense here at all. Neither does /efi.

How did you install Arch in the first place? The concept of mounting seems to be getting lost here.

ArchWiki wrote:

It should be noted that systemd-boot is only able to load the EFISTUB kernel from the EFI system partition (ESP). To keep the kernel updated, it is simpler and therefore recommended to mount the ESP to /boot. If the ESP is not mounted to /boot, the kernel and initramfs files must be copied onto that ESP. See EFI system partition#Alternative mount points for details.

I installed following the wiki and I am vary familiar with mounting and editing my fstab.

SO how the hell would I change my ESP, would I just go into fstab and change this:

UUID=041C-0213          /boot/efi       vfat            defaults        0 2

To this

UUID=041C-0213          /boot       vfat            defaults        0 2

Yes. And copy the kernel files to it beforehand or running mkinitcpio -P after doing the mounting change.
