I have been unable to update my system since Kernel 5.2.14. When I use a kernel later than that the boot process hangs before I can get to any kind of prompt. If I disable it (by adding "modprobe.blacklist=amdgpu" to the kernel boot args) it boots fine but I have a text-only system then.
I've tried various kernels from current going backwards and the most recent one that works for me is 5.2.14.
This is on a Dell Precision 7520 laptop. The gpu is reported as below
VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Baffin [Radeon Pro WX 4130/4150]I've been trying for ages to resolve this but haven't found a solution despite desparate searching, so any help would be really appreciated. I'd really like to be able to update my system ![]()

The first bad kernel was 5.3.1? 5.4 and 5.5 also have the issue?
When the system hangs is there any output on the display?

Have you tried booting with the amdgpu.noretry=0 or amdgpu.ppfeaturemask=0xfffd3fff kernel command line parameters?

When I tested last week, the latest at that time had the issue yes. I can check tomorrow whether the current latest has the issue. I will also try the suggested command line parameters to see if they help and will report back.

Hello, it took me a few days to be in a position to be able to reboot in order to try this. Unfortunately neither amdgpu options added to the kernel command line helped.
I am testing with the 5.4.13 kernel because I am depenent on ZFS and the module on archzfs is still 5.4.
My work around might have to be a switch to the LTS kernel but I would prefer to keep using the main one if I can possibly find a solution to this issue.

I eventually got to the bottom of this one. It was due to failure to load "amdgpu/polaris11_mc.bin" which was due to missing "linux-firmware" package, a result of the changes made to the base package.
