Chromium crashing the whole system?

I let my son play an online game in Chromium browser. After a few minutes nothing would respond. Ctrl+Alt+F2/F3 wouldn't do anything nor mod+shift+q (I use i3-wm so the command is supposed to kill Chromium), Esc key wouldn't do anything either. I pressed the power button and the sound went off, but nothing else would happen, the computer would still be frozen onto that game.
I had to do a hard reset (pressing the reset button) to reboot the computer.

Does someone have an idea on what caused the problem? Is it possible that an application like Chromium freezes the whole system? Or is it a GNU/Linux bug?

My guess would be it's the graphics driver crashing the computer. See if you can find people discussing issues for similar graphics hardware/driver as what your computer uses.

There are currently freezing issues with the i915 driver on several systems with the latest series of kernel versions, e.g.
