[SOLVED] Why is kuserfeedback telemetry a required package ?

So the new package kuserfeedback 1.0.0, required by plasma-workspace, provides "user feedback for applications via telemetry and surveys".

Shouldn't this telemetry package be optional instead of required?

Re: [SOLVED] Why is kuserfeedback telemetry a required package ?

Because shared libraries work that way. /usr/bin/plasmashell links to the libKUserFeedbackCore.so.1 shared library.

discover doesn't link to it AFAICT, which seems odd given https://github.com/KDE/discover/commit/ … 9ebfc62bc3, but it does still try to communicate with kuserfeedback over the bus, again as per that commit.

You could try to determine whether discover actually breaks if it cannot communicate with kuserfeedback. But there is no way it is being removed from plasma-workspace.

OK, thanks eschwartz! I did not check with "ldd" whether any KDE binaries were linked to it.

Well, this is very disappointing from the KDE developers if mandatory telemetry is something they consider acceptable these days. Perhaps they do not even know who Richard Stallman is and what he would have to say about that...

I have uninstalled plasma and kuserfeedback, so the problem is now "solved" from my perspective. Good riddance Plasma, it was nice knowing you.

It's entirely possible that the telemetry itself is only optionally collected. The shared library just has to be available due to the nature of library linking, but nothing says the functionality has to be used, just because it is installed.

I never used plasma, so I cannot check how this works... maybe there's a setting somewhere? Maybe it asks you if you want to submit that data, but respects and remembers your "no"?

What sort of feedback does this entail, e.g. firefox has telemetry too -- it is how the crash reporter works. Which I might add is a dialog box asking you to submit your crash details along with an optional comment etc.
