XPS Iris Plus graphics: mpv behaving oddly (video inside)

I'm not sure how to describe this problem without a video of it, so here's a video of it:

in the video I'm switching from floating to tiled in i3.  The video seems to advance, but it doesn't show the advancing.  (There's no sound in the video, but if you could hear it, you could hear that the audio is playing normally, nothing unusual.

It's a Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 7390 (2019 model) with a core i7-1065g7 processor, which uses onboard "Iris Plus" graphics.

I pursued some of the solutions to screen tearing that others experienced; I'm not getting screen tearing, but I thought it might give me clues to my own problem.  I installed the git version of Mesa (20.0), and I disabled hardware acceleration (which fixed Google Chrome from not displaying changes, but had no effect on the video problem. 

A lot of threads request the output of glxinfo, but it doesn't work on my machine:

Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual or fbconfig

Just for giggles, I tried glxgears, which is in the same mesa-demos package:

Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual
