building kernel using makepkg, good old way or not at all

Hi folks!

I build kernels quite often but I allways use the good old way. Tomk wrote he builds many kernels as well, but all of them using pacman. So I got inspired and now I am wondering how do you folks build your kernel? Do you?

I'd like you all to share your experience with building kernels. Why by the old way, by pacman or ABS, or why dont't you build kernel at all?

P.S. The "stock" kernel in the poll stands for all stock kernels available (arch, beyond, etc...)

I'm curious to know what you mean by "building custom kernel using pacman"?

I think most people use a stock kernel or compile with dibble's PKGBUILD.

I compile my own kernelw using the stock PKGBUILD modified only to bring up menuconfig.

Someone might want to download vanilla kernel, maybe some patches, then write his (or her ) own PKGBUILD and makepkg it using either a pre-made .config, or inserting into PKGBUILD things like make menuconfig, or make xconfig, etc. Just like Penguin does.

But you're right a little, there should have been "makepkg" instead of "pacman", it's a bit confusing. But makepkg is part of pacman, isn't it?

So everybody from now on, do a

s/custom kernel, using pacman/custom kernel, using makepkg

if you are confused

Same here. I don't know why, but I absolutely can't stand configuring the options with gconfig or xconfig, menuconfig is to me more...."organized"
