arch-based nextcloud installation, recommend external storage solution

hello all, I wish to collect opinion from the fora on a topic occupying my self currently. I have been tasked with setting up a nextCloud installation for a small office environment... the machine in question is Xeon-based system (lacking much in the way of internal storage options) equipped with uefi bios from ‘insyde’... the system can accommodate 2 x PCIe cards (8-lane apiece).

the system will run vanilla arch, and it’s usage requires 8-12 tB of active storage, we are talking less about throughput but more availability. Mirroring of the dataset is a must, striping is not desired, no need for sustained throughput of heavy files here... while mirroring is a prerequisite, I need concurrent snapshots as well on something sitting on a different interface than the main storage (presumedly RAID1). I have looked at the many different storage options available these days and am not sure what the optimal interface/paradigm should be, and am loathe to see my friends money Ill-spent.

I have been looking at options based around the thunderbolt interface as of late, which purportedly works with current arch kernel but have 0 experience with tb on Linux whatsoever... DAS, NAS, SAS, eSATA? Could any interject what they thought most appropriate for the need as outlined above? Budget is going to be something like 1-2k total, and noise level is a concern, this will reside in an office setting not a data closet, albeit fitted with a very good HVAC system.

Thanks in advance for any insight friends, cheers.

If your funds don't stretch as far as having an identical testing server then I wouldn't choose Arch. Nextcloud tends to break every time Arch has a major php update until the Nextcloud devs add support.

Choose an officially supported OS instead.

No, it didn't "fix" anything. It just shifted the brokeness one space to the right. - jasonwryan

Hi and thanks for your speedy reply... yes, I actually have the same machine at home running arch, at least in terms of processor/bios, and am aware of nextclouds touchiness when faced with a rolling distribution such as arch... any -Syu’s would be getting tried at home ahead of a blind update I can guarantee, but the storage needs seems agnostic of distro I would think? What kind of storage options would you go with in my stead, arch or otherwise?
