General problems with KDE + Plasma after upgrading [SOLVED]
Hi,
After what seems to have been caused by an upgrade of various KDE packages (5.66.0 → 5.67.0) and Plasma packages (5.17.5 → 5.18.0) the other day, the desktop environment of my system is now running into numerous problems that weren't present before, namely:
- Not showing various program icons in the system tray (Seafile applet, Deluge, Steam, etc)
- Not starting the desktop environment with Num Lock activated despite having this option enabled in the system settings
- Starting with an American keyboard layout despite having the keyboard layout set to Swedish in the system settings and refusing to be set to the latter
- The sound mixer icon missing in the system tray, and refusing to start (typing 'kmix' and 'kmixctrl' in the terminal returns an empty line and does absolutely nothing, even though the sound is working overall)
- The Night Color feature not working, and clicking on that tab in the system settings makes the settings window close down / crash, while having worked before
- The display settings not being saved or loaded properly, because the computer is connected to two monitors and before the settings were loaded correctly and worked flawlessly (one display should be on the left side of the other and rotated clockwise, and while it is possible to access and set this correctly the settings are reset upon rebooting)
By large the system was configured to run with the minimal-dependency packages of KDE and Plasma, and I have mostly stuck with the default settings and everything has been working virtually flawlessly since the assembly and installation of this computer by the end of the summer in 2019. This sudden onset of hiccups feel a bit odd, since the only info I can find regarding Plasma 5.18 is that it's supposed to be a LTS version, and nobody else seems to have these problems (at least not in this degree or amount).
How to best troubleshoot this, and what could be wrong? Is anyone else experiencing similar issues?
KDE / Plasma is started by SSDM through systemd.

Most of these sound like a broken session/surrounding environment issues. What are your outputs for
systemctl status
hostnamectl
localectl
locale
locale -a
stat ~ ~/.config/ ~/.config/plasmarc
sudo journalctl -bin [ code ] [ /code ] tags. FWIW, I indeed do not experience any of these issues.

Ahaaa, when typing "kded5" in the KDE launcher (I am not sure how to check kded5 otherwise since it doesn't appear to have a systemd service unit file) this appeared (when trying to open Background Services):

This definitely calls for an investigation. And how do I check whether kded5 is running....?

Now I've upgraded plasma-framework 5.67.0-1 → 5.67.0-2 and the tray icon are back, kmix starts, the display settings save and load upon booting (even though I had to reconfigure them once), Background Services starts without any complaints, Num Lock starts in a active state and the numpad keys work, clicking Night Color in the system settings doesn't crash the window aaaaaand the Swedish keyboard layout is back (öäå). Thank you very much for the help, all of you :-) Things seem to be back to normal. And thanks for saving me from having an unproductive day. I will check the changes in 5.67.0-2, because I am still curious what the underlying problem was. At least now I will know how to perform backtraces for the future. Thank you yet again, and have a nice day. Marking as solved.
