[SOLVED] NO wired network since kernel 5.5+ : r8169 / PHY driver dumps

Here is an extract from my kernel messages.
Downgrading to 5.4.15 solves the issue (and also the shown trace does not appear anymore in my kernel messages). Searched to see if this was a know kernel bug but did not find anything. Or is this a python problem ?

Any help more than welcome.

Re: [SOLVED] NO wired network since kernel 5.5+ : r8169 / PHY driver dumps

The trace shows what's going on: "read_page callback not available, PHY driver not loaded?"
Typically this means you should remove r8169 from initramfs, or add realtek.ko (the PHY driver) to it.

Re: [SOLVED] NO wired network since kernel 5.5+ : r8169 / PHY driver dumps

@hkall : thanks for the tip. I couldn't figure out this myself (I'm sure a lot of people would not associate the PHY driver with realtek.ko:))

I will try but I find this pretty odd :
How come this was not a problem with 5.4.15 ?
Initramfs between the two is not that different no ? Why would they leave out that module ?

Re: [SOLVED] NO wired network since kernel 5.5+ : r8169 / PHY driver dumps

Just upgraded to 5.5.4 again and ran lsmod | grep realtek.
Here is the output where you see realtek.ko is clearly loaded.
5.4.15 gives the same output by the way. So I do not think this is the problem but I can be mistaken off course (being a kernel noob).

snd_hda_codec_generic 94208 1 snd_hda_codec_realtek

Re: [SOLVED] NO wired network since kernel 5.5+ : r8169 / PHY driver dumps

The r8169 can't init the device, this *might* be, because the the realtek module is loaded too late™ or for entirely different reasons.

You should post the outputs of
- lspci # to see the actual eth device
- sudo journalctl -b # to see the  error in complete context, apparently NM is the process inducing this

Case in point, also
- systemctl list-unit-files --state=enabled

please.

Look also here:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ne … /8168/8411 .

Maybe it doesn't matter, but I also have this miracle R8168 (another revision - 06) gigabit ethernet, which works OK with current 5.5.5 kernel. Some time ago I had to enable IOMMU option in BIOS settings, etc. Some kernels "ago" there was problems with frequent breaking and renewing connection.

Re: [SOLVED] NO wired network since kernel 5.5+ : r8169 / PHY driver dumps

@Fixxer : thanks for the tip but although very similar I have another motherboard from Gigabyte. I cannot disable IOMMU in my bios neither ...

@seth : thanks ! This finally did the trick ! I had to do a cold reboot for it to work though. What's even better : it solved another problem I had with my NIC. With the r8169 my link speed was 100 Mb/s after boot (link set to auto-negotiation). I always had to increase it after to 1 Gbit/s (by simply bringing the ip link down and up again). For some reason this problem is now solved too and with the r8168 my card is now correctly initialized at 1 Gbit/s.

Just upgraded to 5.5.4 again and ran lsmod | grep realtek.
Here is the output where you see realtek.ko is clearly loaded.
5.4.15 gives the same output by the way. So I do not think this is the problem but I can be mistaken off course (being a kernel noob).

snd_hda_codec_realtek 126976 1
snd_hda_codec_generic 94208 1 snd_hda_codec_realtek
ledtrig_audio 16384 2 snd_hda_codec_generic,snd_hda_codec_realtek
snd_hda_codec 163840 4 snd_hda_codec_generic,snd_hda_codec_hdmi,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec_realtek
snd_hda_core 106496 5 snd_hda_codec_generic,snd_hda_codec_hdmi,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec,snd_hda_codec_realtek
snd 114688 22 snd_hda_codec_generic,snd_seq_device,snd_hda_codec_hdmi,snd_hwdep,snd_hda_intel,snd_usb_audio,snd_usbmidi_lib,snd_hda_codec,snd_hda_codec_realtek,snd_timer,snd_pcm,snd_rawmidi
realtek 20480 0
libphy 114688 3 r8169,realtek

There's a misunderstanding. You have an early boot phase (where initramfs is loaded), and later the remaining modules are loaded from rootfs.
Your module list is from after the second phase. But if r8169.ko is in initramfs and realtek.ko is not then the PHY driver isn't available when the network driver is loaded.

Re: [SOLVED] NO wired network since kernel 5.5+ : r8169 / PHY driver dumps

I just ran `modprobe r8169` and lo and behold, the adapter showed up again in `ip link`.

I then added it to "MODULES=()" in `/etc/mkinitcpio.conf` (as it was missing from there), ran `mkinitcpio -p linux` and it was working again after a reboot.

I'm not sure if I may have removed it from MODULES=() in the first place recently though, that's the annoying thing.

r8168 is already installed however.
